Editorial Reviews

Review

"Meredith does a great job keeping the sex steamy and portraying the down--and downright scary--sides of fame. A very promising first novel." ~ Library Journal

"5 stars! MK makes you fall in love with the characters. You will laugh, cry...take a few cold showers and then be angry because it is over and you can't wait for the next book to find out what will happen!!!" ~ BDUB

"5 stars! This book hooked me from the beginning. Just when you think you know what's going to happen...plot twist! Great book!" ~ SGC

Reviewed for Read Your Writes Book Reviews
by Kim

This is going to be one of those reviews that hurt me to write and will probably be bad for the author to hear.

Malibu Betrayals was not the book I thought it was going to be. From reading the blurb, I thought I was going to get a story with a strong and determined heroine; a hunky, charming, to-die for leading man, and a little element of suspense. I thought Samantha Dekker had come through the dark chapter in her life and was ready to regain her life back. I wasn’t expecting to watch her constantly second guess her horrible unhappy marriage over and over again and constantly go back and forth as to whether or not she wanted to be with Hollywood heartthrob Gage Cutler.

At 359 pages, Malibu Betrayals is way too long and repeats things. Yes, I will not deny Sam’s former husband was a vain, self-centered, cheating, donkey’s behind. Yes, he made Sam question things about herself no woman should have to question. Yes, his actions made it hard for her to trust anyone outside of her family. I don’t need to constantly be reminded of it chapter after chapter. I’m not cold-hearted, I truly felt for Sam but her back and forth with Gage was grating. I’ve never been in Sam’s position, so I don’t know all the emotions and grieving time you’re allowed to have. But because I know what Sam was thinking before her husband’s accident, her playing the victim role was too much and brought down what could have been a really good book.

Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely glimpses of how good this book could have been. There were moments where I liked it and was actually enjoying it. But Sam and her actions just kept getting in the way.

I like MK Meredith’s writing style.

Samantha Dekker knows firsthand how brutal Hollywood can be. From the tabloids to the film industry itself, she got the short end of the stick when her life fell apart after her husband's suicide and the resulting media coverage. Now she has a second chance to revive her screenwriting career but it comes with conditions: she will be working with the one man she needs to avoid at all costs - big screen heartthrob, Gage Cutler.

A one-time encounter with Sam made a very deep impression on Gage but Sam made very clear her intention to honor her marriage vows and Gage had to step away, until his inadvertent involvement in the accident that ultimately led to Sam's husband's suicide thrust him back into her life and ruined any chance of him pursing the attraction between them. Until now. Working together is the perfect opportunity to explore the crazy attraction between them, but between their personal issues and external threats - the ever present paparazzi, a stalker fixated on Sam and harassment from Sam's ex-in-laws, they will have to fight for every bit of their happiness.

MALIBU BETRAYALS was a very enjoyable and well-written surprise, giving us a peek inside the lives of celebrities, the highs and lows of their fame and the challenges of having normal relationships. Gage was the quintessential bad boy with the wild lifestyle until that very first meeting with Sam made him reassess his priorities. He had his own demons but his commitment to Sam was never in question and I loved how protective and tender he was with her.

Sam was a little harder to like. While I admired her for trying to make the best of a bad marriage and fighting get her life and her independence back, her penchant for second-guessing herself and running away at the first sign of trouble got tiresome.

I have mixed feelings about Sam and Gage's rocky road to their happily-ever-after. I thought the storyline was interesting and the writing was really good and Sam's mysterious mischief-maker kept me guessing who it was and why he/she felt the need to mess with Sam's peace of mind. I felt so much sympathy for Sam's situation and I hated her smarmy husband and his bitchy mother and sister with a passion! I liked the idea of Sam and Gage together because of their mutual love of the movie industry but they were both somewhat wishywashy about their feelings for each other and it disrupted the momentum of their romance. With a little more editing and a stronger emotional connection between the characters this would have been a 5 star read. I give it three and 3/4 stars.

A good first showing from author MK Meredith. Malibu Betrayals is a contemporary romance with a slight element of mystery. Sam Dekker is trying to reboot her life as a Hollywood screenwriter after her husband’s suicide. She ends up working on a film with the gorgeous bad boy Gage Cutler, whom she blamed for said husband’s suicide a year before. They had connected during a random encounter just before her husband’s car accident with Cutler which resulted in her husband’s disfigurement and eventual suicide. Gage hasn’t been able to get Sam off his mind and his heart since he met her and let her walk away in fealty to her marriage. Even though he had shown her husband was a narcissistic, cheating, monster.

Gage has his own demons to fight and a reputation to live down.

Working together is awkward, partly because of the past, partly because of the chemistry between the two making for some intense romantic situations. This is a contemporary romance after all. If Sam had a facebook page and had to define her relationship status it would definitely be “complicated”. She wants to reclaim her life and have a little fun but at the same time she doesn’t want to allow herself to get close to Gage. Except that she can't get enough of him. Gage can’t stand being apart from her and can’t keep his hands off of her, but he can’t keep chasing her forever either. Can they build something good out of the ashes of their past lives or will Hollywood chew them both up and spit them out?
