- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2024This is a relatable story and is beautifully illustrated.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2024Format: KindleThis picture book is an amazing collection of everyday activities with family at its core. Children will love the bright colorful pictures and the creative way the illustrator has used the space on each page. The author has packed a number of learning concepts that include colors and shapes, a healthy lifestyle, and even imaginary friends. Using characters with different colored faces is important for all children to see and identify with. Reminiscent of How to Wear a Sari by Darshana Khiani, this book is easy to read aloud, with a nice balance between description and dialogue. It has a wonderful pace that children will appreciate. The loving family circle of Grandma, Grandpa, Papa, and Mama will resonate with all readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2024Format: HardcoverMama's Sleeping Scarf is a beautifully written and illustrated children's book. I was impressed with both the story and the bright illustrations.
Mama's Sleeping Scarf is aimed at children ages 3 to 7. It measures about 10 by 111/2 inches in size. It is 32 pages long and is a nicely dust-jacketed children's picture book.
Mama's Sleeping Scarf tells the story of a young girl with her mama's scarf that she wears at night to keep her hair soft. The young girl takes the scarf and magically plays with it all day while her mother is at work. This book shares her adventures with the special scarf.
This is a beautiful story. I like that it is about an African-American family. I love how the mother is going off to work and the rest of the family cares for the young girl. And the young girl has a lovely imagination with the scarf. I think it is inspiring for young minds. The illustrations are bright and beautiful. It is a nice bedtime book to read aloud.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Goodreads. All opinions within this review are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2023Format: HardcoverI am looking forward to buying this book for my grandchildren as I am huge fan of Adichie.
But first I wanted to peek inside so I downloaded the Kindle edition to my iPhone, asI often do with other books. The book cover appears on my kindle for iPhone, but when I try to open it a pop up says ‘ No download available!’
I’m hoping this is an error that can be rectified?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2023Format: HardcoverI so wanted to love this book. It is lovely, but aspects of it are more old-fashioned than the other books I tend to buy for my daughter. That really surprised me, given the author! I wish it focused more on Chino and her imagination.
Heads up to nontraditional families: This book leans heavily into the mom-and-dad-and-grandma-and-grandpa model. It also uses the tired "ew, veggies are gross" messaging, which I found very disappointing.
If you're looking for children's books set in African cultures, I highly recommend Atinuke's work--the stories and characters are wonderful (and the family structures are vague). Angela Brooksbank's art is an engaging cultural introduction, too. We love those books in both English and French!

grabbed this book as suggested by the group and that too at lightening deal, courtesy KBC.
This is such a lovely book telling the story of a day in the life of the little girl when her mother goes out to work. Every page is composed in such a way that it seems as if the author has illustrated our daily routine . Like when the little girl chinu asks if her mother doesn't come back, she assures her that she always comes back and meanwhile she can have her Mama's scarf.
Then she spends her day with father, grandpa and grandma. Tries new things.
At dinner time having vegetables after initial hesitation. She expresses gratitude for the dinner. And then it's bedtime. Everything is so well written with her mother's sleeping scarf being a connecting link strengthening their family bond.

The book is beautifully illustrated and has a lovely imaginative storyline.
NB: I bought this for a queer Mum and wasn’t aware that Mum, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa are included in the story.
