It must be difficult for the collectors of anthologies - who do you appeal to? The person wanting a taste of steampunk, the beginner who is just getting into it, or the dedicated afficianado looking for new and innovative treatments? The genre as it is today, or an overview of the genre from the start?
This particular collection focusses on the recent trends in steampunk, particularly in relation to location. Personally I prefer my steampunk to be in the UK, but not everybody does. There is a heavy weighting in this collection towards the US. But to offset this - from my pov - the stories take a very creative approach to the steampunk genre. And best of all, there is a variety of style and tone to the stories.
If you like steampunk at all, you will love some of these stories and enjoy others. And the book is an excellent sampler of steampunk authors, giving you the chance to discover new favourite writers.
Overall, this is a winner.
From adventure to social awareness and civil rights activism, this anthology is a must for Steampunk fans.
I like lots of short stories, but I don't feel that they pack a punch.
