I'm not sure what everyone else is complaining about here. After finishing this book I was by far in the best shape of my life at age 27. I lost 14 lbs and went from 19% body fat to 12.5% in 4 months! Had abs for the first time ever!

John Romaniello's 'Engineering the Alpha' is life-changing. Okay, at least it's body changing, but the first three chapters are a pep talk to psyche the reader into believing that both an inner and outer transformation can occur with his diet and exercise Man-i-festo.*

I have been eagerly awaiting the day I would submit my review, so happy I am with the results of his four-part, sixteen-week program. Clearly and cogently trailblazing the path to a hormone metamorphoses, he gives the reasoning and means to each phase of transformation. The diet and exercise are drawn into four programs (or phases): 1.) Prime, when insulin is utilized more efficiently. 2.) Adapt, when testosterone is boosted. 3.) Surge, when growth hormone is increased, and cortisol, the stress-induced hormone is diminished. The approach is methodical with a framework for diet and exercise that shuffles the deck for both in a systematic way.

In the motivational chapters and the supplementary elements of the program chapters, he makes it clear that his program has proven results, scientific backing, and great chances to improve a man's ability to reduce fat, increase muscle, power, and strength, and decrease estrogen (found in every man). He also elaborates that the antecedent effects will pay dividends at work, in relationships, in self-esteem, and in the bedroom.

Personally, I could see and feel the effects after each phase, and often feel a (distinctive) surge after every workout. During the Prime phase, I had to tighten my belt, saw a ripped physique, and lost about ten pounds. During the Adapt phase, I gained strength and noticed during my circuits, I did eight pull-ups for the first time in my life. (My previous best was three before this program!) During the Surge phase, I noticed a difference in my libido and my ability to add weight and my endurance to his physical routines. In the last portion, I faltered mostly. I still feel like a well-oiled machine, but, just like Roman's blog, I, too have difficulty avoiding a cold (In my case prolonged!) in October, so I stopped his 8 and 16 meal plan and ate a lot of what I wanted. Still, one of my photos shows progress (especially for someone who recently turned 51).

Now, 'Man 2.0...' is the third tier in my bodybuilding and diet education. Tom Venuto's '
Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle: Transform Your Body Forever Using the Secrets of the Leanest People in the World ' literally turned me around from spinning my wheels in the gym after nearly three decades. He showed me how quality calories and mixing up high carb and low carb days are essential for bodybuilding. Next, Jonathan Bailor's ' The Smarter Science of Slim: What the Actual Experts Have Proven About Weight Loss, Dieting, & Exercise ' taught me (He did much more of course.) to have vegetables at every sitting, and I discovered the breakthrough of stevia as a sweetner. Now all three authors have delved into the essential concept that reducing fat and becoming built or lean is highly dependent on manipulating and resetting key hormones through diet and exercise.

In all fairness to the two mentioned authors, I followed Roman's 'Alpha...' to the T. I kept a food diary with caloric, fat, carb, and protein content of everything I ate every day and all day. I brought my Kindle to the gym to ensure I'd follow his program faithfully every time. I bought a cheap $5.00 food scale to weigh all my food. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO ALL BODYBUILDERS THAT YOU HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING METHODICALLY SMART! BODYBUILDING IS A SCIENCE, AND FOR $16.00 (NOW $12.00) FAR LESS THAN ONE SESSION WITH A TRAINER, YOUR ENTIRE LIFE CAN CHANGE! THESE THREE BOOKS LITERALLY STOPPED ME SPINNING MY WHEELS AND GOT ME USING MY TIME AND RESOURCES FAR MORE EFFICIENTLY!

Not every issue is resolved now. Venuto had me eating 5-6 meals a day, and Roman has me eating three meals (or more, if you choose) on a sixteen-hour fast, eight-hour food cycle. Now, both worked effectively, and, although they both produce ample scientific evidence in their favor, I found both meal programs work well. I do prefer Roman's meal plan as more systematic (especially in how it lowers, then gradually adds, carbohydrates as you grow and get lean). (I don't have Venuto's 'Holy Grail...' so I don't know how much progress he has made with his plan.) Also, one of the most difficult aspects I found were his "Cheat Days" during Phase II. I loved to gorge, but the following fast day was demanding. Still, there was always method to his madness. I didn't consult a doctor for any of these programs, but you may want to, especially if you have special medical issues.

Thanks John Romaniello and Adam Bornstein for giving me the power tools to change my life and my appearance. I've never made a more valuable investment in my time and money for the pastime of weight training.

(P.S. I can understand many reviewers yen to post and publish their reviews right after publication of this work, but I do challenge one thing: How can you state that this diet and exercise program are inferior to others you have tried based on a hypothetical premise? I mean how do you really know if 'Man 2.0 Engineering the Alpha' is really more or less effective until you've actually tried it? I have a few examples, and while I haven't tried many of the programs mentioned by other reviewers, I do know how well this one works from experience.) Just sayin'.

I know a lot of the 'negatives' that have been brought up is that it's not as much of 'lifestyle philosophy book' as people would have like or thought they were sold to believe. I think you really have to put it in context of it's target market.

We want change, we want information, and most of all we like when something gets to the point. This book does all three, but not one of them is predominant, which is kind of the beauty of it. First it explains how society and our hormones are creating a cocktail of less-than-awesomeness. It ties things together with the hero's journey, which call it cliche, cheesy, whatever you like, but it WORKS. Men connect with the Hero's Journey, because in our own minds, we are always the hero. Our inner hero is just hiding behind layers of fat, confusion, lack of knowledge, time, or whatever. Engineering the Alpha pulls us in on the concept of getting that inner hero to show, but doesn't just put it on a platter, because it's not easy. It's never easy. There's no magic pill or powder, and I hope we all know that by now. It tells you that you've got to be ready answer the call, then the training regiment says "You've answered? Well here it is. GET TO WORK."

This book asks for no excuses, and truly some of the less favorable reviews cite the old adage "I don't have time." or "I can't make the 16/8 eating fit into my schedule." This basically is you refusing the call. There is nothing more simple to follow the intermittent fasting pattern. You eat three meals a day? Well, get rid of one and add calories to the post-workout meal. It's not difficult. I could understand if you couldn't eat at certain times because of work and other obligations, but this is about doing the opposite - NOT eating. Just don't pick up the fork. Simple.

I'm finally following through on a program because the beginning of the book took the time to speak to ME. Not tell me why celery is awesome, or how to arrange a plate based on zones, or what results got that you should too. No, it was about telling you "Hey, we get it. This world is not the optimal place for staying fit, we're giving you a pass on all that. But right here, we make a stand, right here we man up."

Of course the program works well, and I've seen great, amazing even, results (I'm currently on phase 2 and seen an increase in Lean Body Mass and nice drop in BF%) but other programs may work close, or just as well. The beauty of the book is that it inspires you to take the journey. It won't work on everyone of course, because some people are just skeptics and set out thinking of making something fail so they can call it a fraud. But from my experience, and from many, many, others I've seen on Facebook, Fitocracy, Twitter, Bodybuilding.com, MyFitnessPal, really all the major fitness social media, this book speaks to us, and it's given us results where others have failed. Those books didn't fail because of faulty regiments most likely, they failed because they address the path but not the individual.

I have nothing but thanks for Roman and Born, and hopefully others will heed the call. It's time to kick some tail, in the gym, in the kitchen, in life, everywhere.

Receiving Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new newsletter Arnold’s Pump Club by email I heard the name Adam Bornstein for the first time who belongs to that newsletter team. I was happy to find this 273-page-book “Engineering the Alpha” written by John Romaniello and Adam Bornstein on Amazon. I read certain paragraphs in it. It made me realize how hormones work in our body. It’s a good to understand book. For instance, the two authors say, “As we mentioned, stress increases your cortisol levels. (p. 106). And a few lines below: “But new research from the University of Chicago is shedding on just how significant cortisol can be in harming your sex life. In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, men who slept fewer than five hours a night experienced a 15 percent drop in testosterone. And that drop was directly correlated to – and potentially caused by – an increase in cortisol (pp. 106-107). Sentences like these make me understand medical facts better.

It is an interresting story - I have purchased 2 pieces of this book by mistake and it was already too late to cancell. Once I have openned the book and went it quickly trough I found that the book is so great that it is worth to keep both pieces and might offer one to one of my friends or gym counterparts. I finally sold the book to a colleague within 5 minutes. Furthermore I had to order one on Kindle as I want to have it always with me on my mobile. Today, my Friend visited me from abroad and I showed him my new book - there was no other way than to give it to him and order new one for myself. I strongly recommend to purchase to everyone who takes care about his live style, body health and smart mind. It is not only for a heavy bodybuilders but really for all "Men" that would like to appear a Man without brackets. For a German or east European readers it would be necessary to jump sometimes over relative long "American style-like" blah blah sections and concentrate to the core , but it really works and gives You an unique guide trough Your live style and training change.
