Serving as the predecessor to the wildly popular U.S. series, Three's Company, MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE was a phenomenally successful British comedy, running for six series in total, spinning off two further series and making household names of its stars Richard O'Sullivan, Paula Wilcox and Sally Thomsett.
Chrissy (Paula Wilcox) and Jo (Sally Thomsett) need a third roommate for their London flat, and find the perfect one in a passed-out party guest, Robin (Richard O'Sullivan). But landlord Mr. Roper (Brian Murphy) isn't so sure about the setup, so the women tell him Robin's gay ("we told him you were a poof!"), though, naturally, Robin is wildly attracted to both of his roomies. Much of the comedy consists of the trio of roommates keeping up the front for the rest of their building and unexpected guests, workmen, and council authorities.
While some of the humor is dated, the snapshot of the mores of the '70s shows a culture in enormous transition, and the fact that it was able to laugh at itself was a big part of the times, on either side of the Pond. Man About the House lasted six seasons on British TV and spawned two spinoffs in England alone--and, let us not forget, launched the careers of Suzanne Somers and John Ritter in the U.S. Let the high jinks begin! --A.T. This DVD set only contains the first 2 seasons of the show, and I hope the remaining 4 seasons (continuing until 1976) will eventually be released in Region 1. All episodes are available in Region 2, so let's hope those of us in North America will eventually be able to see the entire series (I still don't see the reasoning behind the whole 'Region' marketing approach to DVD)!
American sitcoms tend to get stupid and silly as the years progress but
British Sitcoms NEVER lose their appeal. Richard O'Sullivan portrays the sexy "Robin Tripp" always on the make against the stoic Chrissey played by Paula Wilcox and the demure "Jo" played by Sally Thomsett. Together they make an intersesting threesome and provide a unique look at life in London in the 1970's.
Of course, the Ropers steal the whole show and Mr. Roper is a force to be reckoned with. Always trying to be forceful but never making his way past Mrs. Roper. We are always left wondering weather she will jump on Robin (or anyone else for that matter), Mildred is the true star of the show.
Buy it, it's funny, cute, lots of inunendo and definitely worth the money.
Overall I am content with the FremantleMedia/BCI Eclipse edition of the DVD of MATH series one and two and will happily purchase the rest of the series as they are released.

I saw this show in the early 80's and loved it. Although I love John Ritter, I always liked this version of "Three's Company" better.Published 5 months ago by Robin Rickert
