Mr. Rush presents us with a thrilling account of faith and a journey to an isolated island. The book is a masterpiece, detailing an early life as an atheist to a switch to a missionary to the islands around Vanuatu. Everything from being made a temporary pastor to avoiding drive-by shootings. This book proves that God is active in the world today, and deeply cares for those unreached people in the world. A true-life account of a missionary, and a wonderful example of God's work in our world.

John Rush gives us a present day triumph of faith. The book is masterfully written in a personal down to earth style. The author takes you from the California gold country, to the most remote location on earth to a little island in vanuatu which is home to an an amazing tribe of people. He tells the true story of a young man's struggle to come to grips with the reality of God, and the blessings that come from obedience to God.

I loved this book. The story was both fascinating and captivating. In some ways this book reminded me of "Hand of Mercy" by Ann Greenleaf Wirtz. Both of these books describe extraordinary spiritual experiences of (otherwise) every day people.

It is an interesting book, I read it as a young person. However, there does not seem to be any kernel of truth to it. The story is fanciful and imaginative, but there is no evidence that it is actually a true story. Certainly, the John Frum cult is real; it continues to be important to many people. But there is no evidence that John Rush visited the people, or that he converted them to Christianity, not that that would have been better for them anyway.

The title of the story takes its name from a wood carving figure (the one featured on the cover) of a man with a bird on his head, which the last chapter explains is a local symbol for a man carrying good news from abroad. There is no evidence for this anywhere either; neither Tamtam nor Namange, the Vanuatu carving types, seem to ever depict a human and a bird simultaneously. Also, the face on the carving does not appear to be at all similar to the Vanuatu's carved faces. What it DOES look like is a statue from Easter Island with a bird added. Birds are known to have been very important to the post-tree culture of Easter Island, being the inhabitant's main food until the reintroduction of trees. So a much more likely theory for the origin of the figure on the front is a artistic representation someone made based on the history of Easter Island.
