But I was surprised at the character "Adam," played by Sammy Davis Jr. He was just way too damaged and angry. I found him repellent throughout the film. Yes, I could empathize with him, the racism he had endured and his guilt from the circumstances of the loss of his family. But Adam's anger simply was too pervasive and extreme, and the character became entirely unappealing. (There was an uncanny similarity to Sean Penn that I noted; has Sean Penn been channeling this character from his father's film?) Thus, the entire movie revolved around someone who was constantly annoying me, and the entire experience degraded as a result. Adam needed more occasional flashes of charisma, kindness or other redeeming characteristics. I think this was a scripting problem, not an acting deficiency from Sammy.
On a different note (pun intended), the included CD has five really great jazz songs on it by various artists. So, for the modest price, you get some historic footage in the film, and a nice, albeit short (approximately 20 minutes) CD. All said, I recommend buying this package.
When I tuned into this movie, within about three minutes Sammy Davis had conversations with Louis Armstrong, Ossie Davis and Mel Tormé.
Also in the cast of "Adam" are Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra Jr., Cicely Tyson, thombonist Kai Winding and Lola Falana. Laugh-In's Johnny Brown plays Les, a fellow musician blinded in a drunken car crash that also killed Adam's wife and child, thus his debilitating feelings of guilt. Gerald S. O'Loughlin is a sheriff and bass-voiced Roy Glenn, a supporting actor on TV's AMOS 'N' ANDY SHOW, is a police sergeant.
Among the uncrediteds are sax man Benny Carter, Michael V. Gazzo (GODFATHER !!'s Frank Pantangelli), Morgan Freeman and comics George Kirby and a slimmed-down "Fat" Jack E. Leonard.
Sammy's excellent simulated playing sequences include incredibly hot overdubs by Nat Adderley.
If this film has one flaw it's the corny Hollywood ending,
but you'll have to see it to decide for yourself if this is too contrived and over-the-top.
