Oh, right... formalities: I was given and ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tracy Tappan does a great job of only giving you what you need in background information, not one detail more. So, since this is Jason's story, you find out what you need to about Jason... not too much about Shane. (We will have to wait for Shane's book (*sigh*) As for a love story, the hero and heroine become interested in each other in such a different way than is normal for any romance that I have read to date. It was a new and refreshing take and definitely defied my expectations (in a good way).
Now, there was some talk of killing of a pet, before I agreed to review this book. As a huge animal lover, this made me nervous. So I braced. I committed. The scene was tastefully written... she didn't drag out the memory, and didn't go into details. It was still heinous, and I still wanted to gut the man who ordered it, but I was able to not dwell on it long. Plus, when you see that the character didn't handle it well... you come to sympathize.
Also, a lot of series books will say that they are standalones, but they have all of these extra characters, who obviously have a history. This means that while it's not necessary for you to know the extra characters, you always feel like you are missing something. Not with Man Down. It's part of a series, but it may as well be a one and done book.
Overall, the book moved along at a brisk pace so I was never bored. I had my emotions yanked an pulled all over the place, so you know I was invested. And by the end of the book, I did not have any questions... meaning Tracy Tappan was able to resolve all questions I could possible have. This is a great read and a wonderful add on to the Wings of Gold Series...can't wait for the next one!
Jason and Shane are the lone survivors of the helicopter crash, and have to work together to save each other. Jason and Shane make their way back to the Int'l Humanitarian Medical Relief (IMHR) Base that they flew out of to find it basically deserted, except for Dr. Farrin Barr and a handful of patients. There is a trader at the IHMR Base who notifies the infidels of Jason and Shane's arrival - the same person who helped the infidels down their helicopter. Jason, an injured Shane and Dr. Barr are on the run to save their lives. Jason and Shane friendship turns around as they are on the run, and we learn more about Dr. Barr. During all of the craziness, Jason and Farrin become close, they bond and fall in love.
Another emotional roller coaster ride, well written story that is truly worth the read. I'm anxiously waiting for Book 4 in the The Wings of Gold Series … Petty Office Shane (Mad Dog) Madden's story in "Serve with Honor".
