And Mat Nastos had given me exactly what I wanted. Pure entertainment in the good o'l Pulp style.
Story is fairly simple, but works:
In 1942 a group of Czech and Slovak freedom fighters backed by the British attempted to assassinate Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich, the most hated man in Czechoslovakia, also known as "The Butcher of Prague". In our world their mission, code-named "Operation Anthropoid" was a success, but in the world created by Mat Nastos it turned out differently.
Being a member of the top-secret occult group known as the Edda Society, Heydrich had access to various artifacts, that saved his life. Freedom fighters led by the Scottish commando Ian MacAndrew are forced to flee, when Nazi reinforcements arrive, being outnumbered, and outgunned, not only without a chance to finish their mission, but also with very slim chances of survival.
But then, the tide is turned when a mysterious stranger arrives to help them. Man calling himself Grimm, a white skinned giant with superhuman strength and durability, armed with a over-sized gun, and a huge rune-covered sword slaughters Nazis with ease, and nearly cuts Heydrich in half with his magical weapon, but is unable to deal a finishing blow, due to the interruption from further German reinforcements.
Now our freedom fighters must help the mysterious giant to finish his job, or the forces let free by the Nazi scientists would destroy our world...
In a nutshell, we have a fairly standard story about a semi-invincible hero fighting his way through armies of enemies with relative ease, and saving the world. The devil is in details however.
The book is full of energy, which coupled with hyperbolic style peppered with bombastic descriptions evokes the spirit of classic Pulps, which would be a treat for any fan of this genre. Fans of the dynamic, and gory action scenes should be satisfied too, as they would get they fill too.
It has this cinematic vibe, that hooks You in, despite the overall simpleness of it all. I really got into the story, and was quite surprised how fast time flies when reading about Grimm's adventures, despite it's flaws.
The story is very formulaic, and predictable, as were the classic Pulps. It is not a big flaw, since it's still enjoyable, but don't expect any surprises, or anything like that. There are also a few spelling mistakes in the text, that was pretty easy to spot even by a non-native speaker like me, so I think if the author cared to check it, he could have avoided it. As it is now, it may get a bit irritating for some readers.
But overall it is a very fun book, perfect for a quiet evening, or a long boring bus trip. If You like Pulp, or Man Adventure genres, You should also enjoy "Man With The Iron Heart".
Can't wait for the next Donner Grimm novel to come out.
Man With The Iron Heart pulls you in during the first couple of pages and drags you along mercilessly as our small group of soldiers embark upon a quest to rid the world of the evil Reinhart Heydrich-a man who has committed unspeakable evil under the guidance of Hitler. What begins as a seemingly routine ambush soon turns into a fight for survival as MacAndrew and his band of brothers are close to being beaten when a mysterious and godly presence steps in to help. what follows is a race against time, other worldly creatures, Necrogolems and oh so much more!
The main characters, Donner Grimm and MacAndrew are just great, they form a terrific brotherly bond, becoming a sort of Batman and Robin team. I wanted to know more about Grimm’s history straight away and Nastos tells his story mid way through the book. It adds a real emotional element to the carnage when you discover why it is he is fighting and what he carries with him. As for the Nazis, well, they are suitably bad bunch as you can imagine: ruthless, uncaring, evil and selfish, and I love it when Grimm despatches of them with extreme prejudice. The dialogue is witty and overall I have no real complaints, although perhaps it was over a little too quickly. I wanted MORE, damn it!
I think Cohesion Press has a real winner on their hands here. Man With The Iron Heart should really appeal to all fans of speculative fiction. It’s got elements of action, horror, science fiction, steampunk, fantasy, I also think comic book readers will enjoy the break-neck pacing of this book. I seriously can’t wait for the next book. The foundations for a strong series have been set in stone and I look forward to following Grimm and MacAndrew to Valhalla and beyond.
5/5 runes from The Grim Reader.
