The writing is fine, but sort of pulpy ( in the same way that the TV series "V" was). This is a beach read, not fine highbrow literature. But who cares? The story is told in a series of shortish chapters, each written with Jillian, Will and a host of other characters as the first person narrator. A couple of times I had to flip back and remind myself who the narrator was at the moment, but basically things flowed smoothly. The pacing was steady, and the author takes his time revealing Will's secrets a bit at a time. I liked that, despite the wish several times that the author would get to it already. The final reveal about Willl, takes place well before the fireworks at the end and was pretty predictable, but hey, so what? It was still very enjoyable.
The bad guys here are the Catholic Church, instantiated by Father St. Jacques, a Vatican envoy who has been chasing Will all over the world for the better part of 30 years. The Vatican wants to lock Will up, because he is a threat to their whole business model. Jillian is not a very nice person at the start of the story. She's short-tempered and bigoted, and very hard to like. As a main character, that's a bit rough to take, and her Scrooge-like conversion at the end sees a bit sudden. Will, on the other hand, is impossibly nice and kind, as are all the other people that we meet except for St. Jacques, who, I suppose, has a reason to be a bit prissy and pissy, although I think the author might be overplaying him just a bit.
All in all, an interesting concept novel that will appeal to fantasy fans unless they are easily insulted by anyone who says a bad word about the Church. I, for one, liked it.
Recommended.

I absolutely agree with all of these things, except that I am not so forgiving with my stars. This book dragged on to the point where I found a review that summed up the last 100 pages so I didn't have to bother.
Also, there were too many characters, almost to the point of confusion. I'd just get interested in a character and then poof! They were gone for 50 pages. I liked some of these characters and hated others. I liked the budding artist but disliked the reporter. Plus, I do not believe that a priest could be such a caricature of evil. And I'm not even Catholic. Or religious.
I will probably try another book by this author because he sure can write. He writes so well that I have remembered this book for almost a year, so you know it had to be well written. But it was SUCH a disappointment after the great beginning.
It was intriguing, the writing grabbed me and pulled me through the first 150 pages. Who or what was Will? I changed my mind a couple of times.
Then the story meandered; it seemed lost...
It peaked in a strong sequence and slid home.
300, rather than 420, pages would have made for a tighter book.

To get the most out of this deeply felt story the reader needs to be able to tune in to a spiritual view of human existence and to have a belief in the reality of love and redemption. I'm extremely cynical usually, but I did enjoy the author's exuberant belief in transformation and especially, also, the last few scenes. If only it were true......
The basic premise - here is a man 'cursed' by God to live forever - contains its own mystery: who is he and why was he so cursed. The answers to this slowly become clear and are both clever and heartbreaking. A second layer is added to the story by the increasing sense of urgency developed by the Catholic Church's hunt for our man of mystery, the priest charged with this task never more than a few days behind and now literally right at his bedside.
This is a good story, gently told. It delivers everything the reader requires and, vitally, the ending we crave.
