About The Man Who Laughs
“I am a symbol. Oh, you all-powerful fools, open your eyes. I represent all. I embody humanity as its masters have made it.”
The Man Who Laughs is a novel by French author Victor Hugo, first published in 1869. Originally published under the title L’Homme qui rit, or By Order of the King, it is set in England at the end of the 17th century.
The story follows the life of a young nobleman, disfigured as a child on the orders of the king, so that his face wears a permanent grin. Homeless, Gwynplain and the baby girl her rescues during a storm, are taken in by an itinerant carnival vendor called Ursus. Considered one of Hugo’s greatest works, this is an unmissable literary classic.
