About The Man Who Laughs
The Man Who Laughs by French author Victor Hugo is a book of literary fiction first published in 1869.
‘It was said of him that he had once been for a short time in Bedlam; they had done him the honour to take him for a madman, but had set him free on discovering that he was only a poet.’
Synopsis
Set in 17th-century England, this deeply moving tale recounts the story of Gwynplaine, a young nobleman, who, in a cruel act of punishment by order of the king, is deliberately and permanently disfigured so that his face wears a permanent grin. Abandoned and homeless, he taken under the wing of a vagabond philosopher who becomes his protector and travelling companion.
Despite his horrifying appearance, Gwynplaine matures into a beloved performer renowned for his melancholic yet compelling stage presence and confronts obstacles and heartbreak even as he achieves fame and fortune. Weaving a tangled web of political intrigue and forbidden love into the narrative, Hugo explores themes of personal identity, relationships, and the human condition in this poignant and enduring story.
