Mesmerizing writing, story

This work captures the plain spoken voice of old west characters perfectly and creates a mashup of horror/scifi/post apocalyptic genre's that is fascinating. The story had me craving the answers to each mystery presented. While written in an easy to understand, straightforward style the plot is perfectly paced and each chapter advances the story. Mysterious underground monsters, religious fanatics, towns without pity, cannibals, a vicious (but friendly) bear sidekick, marauding gangs and a boy with a terrifying task make for an epic tale.

Here I found a bleak world where tenderness is hard to find. Anti hero's are front and center and a boy becomes a man in the shadow of a legendary personification of a badass. Each character has a unique voice and style creating a mesmerizing dynamic. The writing is so good that even a mute child is a fascinating character, she has a way about her that is incredibly endearing.

This is among the best, most interesting, talented writing I have ever come across, so clear and natural. I have never read any other work by R.W. Ridley. This author is one of the few authors I will continue to follow and one of the few I will pay to read after downloading a gratis book included in my Prime membership. Well done, please give me more of this world.

Cold-hearted killer vs. Kid with nothing to lose

I really liked this novel. It's one of the best I've picked up for free on Amazon. It's definitely worth the normal, listed cost.

The characters were vividly written and the setting was handled just right.
There's no reason for me to write an overview of the novel because the author and others have successfully done so. I'll just say that Henry, our young protagonist, is a joy to read.

This is the best of the futuristic western I've read, and while there are a billion post-apocalyptic tales swimming around in the pool of recent books, I was glad to see that this element of the story was not a focal point. It helped define and shape characters and the setting. It didn't become the crux of the tale. There's also the tried and true coming off age story here, and while it is a lot like many others, Henry is too dynamic to not enjoy.

There were a few bad moments. Grammatical errors were an issue a little too often for me to ignore. The same can be said for odd moments, especially at the beginning of the novel, where characters act or speak in ways that do not make a great deal of sense. Luckily for the reader, those moments are few, and it doesn't take long for the story to take the reader right back into Henry's world.

It isn't a world anyone in their right mind would want to live in, but damned if I'm not looking forward to visiting it again.

Suprisingly Impressive

I must admit I have never heard of this author or any of his other works. I just gave this book a chance... and was heavily rewarded for my open-mindedness. The story is set in the future, where a 75 year old war has ravaged the world. Parts of this world remind me a bit of that of The Gunslinger and the Dark Tower from Stephen King's sci fi/fantasy epic, although the story and writing style are different than that of Mr. King. This is a tale of a boy's coming of age in a harsh world, a tale filled with diverse and likable characters. The dialogue is crisp and doesn't seem forced, the settings and characters are colorful, the plot moves along at a good pace and overall this story is one of the best I have come across since I got my kindle.

Highly recommended. And this coming from a reviewer that doesn't often rate ANYTHING as 5 stars.

I truly enjoyed this book and don't feel I can do it justice in a short review, but here it goes... I'm a big fan of Ridley's Oz Chronicles series (and highly recommend them as well) and was curious if I would enjoy this one. The characters and back story pulled me in right away. Abel Decker is the anti-hero the town seeks to recruit in hopes of saving their town. Not to be cliche, but he's the man you love to hate. Ridley's storytelling and scene-setting captured me right off the bat just his Oz Chronicles did. Two Notch is definitely geared more towards an adult audience than Ridley's Oz series though, but that was a good thing IMHO. Some of the story may not be appropriate for younger audiences.

So what are you waiting for? Buy this book and read it! Check out his other books their reviews. Once you read one you'll want to read them all.

I couldn't suggest a better way to spend a few hours than to spend it reading The Man Who Saved Two Notch by R.W. Ridley! From the first sentence to the last it was impossible to put down!
The author's style makes it easy for the reader to be there! The characters are folks you will feel you know! Nothing seems outrageous or bizarre...it's all very ordinary at that place in that time.
What doesn't change according to location or era are basic life truths most people deal with in life. What is right and what is wrong? Good and bad? Semi-finals and coming of age. Loyalty and courage. It's all here along with plenty of action and a Bear named Bob!
Check this book out. I would recommend it highly and I look forward to reading more by R.W. Ridley!

"The Man Who Saves Two Notch" by R.W. Riddle is a remarkable coming-of-age adventure/horror novel filled with ingratiating, quirky, peculiar, riveting, and sometimes poignant, backwoods characters that will make you smile, laugh, lament, gasp, forgive, and overtly cheer for again and again. To say I was amazed with the storyline would be a gross understatement, "I absolutely loved this story!" The first 80 pages are a bit slow but after that the story accelerates at breakneck speed. Be forewarned there are copious amounts of profanity throughout the story! The best hillbilly backwoods adventure story I've had the pleasure to read in my lifetime...5+ stars!!!
