1999 Remaster vs 2015 Remaster CD

The 1999 remastered CD of The Man Who Sold The World from the 24-bit master compared to the 2015 CD remastered version:
1999 version
is slightly compressed (as it plays louder than the 2015 remaster at the same volume level), is less basey, but the base playing is clearer and more defined, the CD sounds much more lively
2015 version
sounds more like the original album on vinyl (which I had and remember), which has a more muddled and less clear sound. The base is deeper, but it sounds like it is exaggerated on The Width of a Circle.
Conclusion: Both versions are well done, it is a matter of preference. I prefer the 1999 remastered version as it opens up the sound and admittedly pumps up the detail.

Bowie's Heaviest Release

His recent death provided an opportunity to ask myself "If you love Bowie so much, why haven't you heard/bought more of his albums?". The albums I owned are Hunky, Ziggy, Alladin, Young Americans, and Low (not to mention the hits package ChangesBowie). So I recently bought this and Diamond Dogs. I had no idea what I was getting into with Man Who Sold, other than the title track...but let me just say this album rocks hard and heavy. Where have I been? It's great. Dark, but great. Mick Ronson's guitar playing is incredible throughout. Bowie's singing is great throughout. At times, the songs sound like Black Sabbath - at least the guitar tone and chord progression. Some songs have a Jethro Tull quality, and sometimes Peter Gabriel-era Genesis (now that I give it a second thought, chronologically speaking, could this have influenced Genesis?). Bowie and Ronson are severely underappreciated as true rockers. This might be my third favorite Bowie album (Ziggy and Hunky being the first two) .

V Good Album

Like everyone else not entirely indifferent to David Bowie, I was saddened by news of his death which came just days after the release of his last album. His music has been a part of my life since childhood although I have to be honest and say that I stopped listening to his new output after Ashes to Ashes but carried enjoying his 1970s output.

I ordered this not having heard it since the late 70s. Having more time to listen and judge and more patience to tease out the secrets of the music, I have listened to this album a couple of times. The title track and All the Madmen were the two songs I recall from those days and it has been great to hear them again.

Taking this album as a whole, I would say that Bowie was still finding his feet as an artist. The subsequent album, Hunky Dory feels much more the work of a mature finished artist. This one is very different. It is much heavier in tone. The bass and drums are much louder in the mix and the lyrics have a very disturbing tone. I love Mick Ronson's guitar playing and Bowie's singing on this recording.

In all I would definitely say that this is well worth exploring and enjoying on its own terms and I recommend it highly.

Flawless vinyl pressing

Unbelievable clarity in this pressing, and I'm fond of the prominent bass in this mix. Thick and perfectly flat 180 gram. As far as the music itself, you owe it to yourself if you're a Bowie fan who hasn't listened to this. This is as heavy and dark as Bowie gets, and a grower that's quickly become one of my favorites in his discography.

I can still remember hearing "Width of a Circle" blasting in an Atlanta record store and thinking, "damn, that guy can play guitar!". Not to mention, "who the Hell is putting down that bass??". I thus discovered Mick Ronson as (my all-time favorite) guitar hero, and that a certain record producer (Tony Visconti) could play a pretty mean bass guitar.

Finally, a Good CD Version

I've been waiting to hear a good version of this album since I first started collecting Bowie's back catalog in the early '90s. This 2015 version sounds the best to my ears. It maintains the vibe and balance of the original recording while presenting all of the instruments clearly.

Poor remastering, avoid this dog

The Parlophone remaster of arguably Bowie's best lp is a dog. Sonic filtering and noise reduction were applied. High end sounds synthetic and the overall sound is muffled and dull. There is deep bass but that's probably just an EQ/tone control adjustment and likely has nothing to do with any sampling technology improvements. Seek out the 1999 Ryko cd which is far superior, especially the high end

Yup. The most misleading album cover ever. Bit like finding gentle nursery rhymes on an Iron Maiden album. Bought this when I was 17/18 years old wanting more Bowie in my life, and getting a whole alternative depiction. Okay, again and again it's "width of a circle....amazblah blah blah...Black Country rock etc." the bricks of any great building need superb mortar - 'running gun blues', 'after all', 'the supermen' and the psych shanty of 'saviour machine', do this. They are the mysterious trips on this tablet of knowledge. Ronson, Visconti, Wood best band on Bowie recordings ever. Buy it again in crisp heavy vinyl, flat with textured sleeve, twenty two years on.
This is why you need this in your life. Mandress' and all......
