Joe Conason (born January 25, 1954) is an American journalist, author and liberal political commentator. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of The National Memo, a daily political newsletter and website that features breaking news as well as commentary and analysis from influential progressive thinkers. Since 2006, he has served as editor of Type Investigations, a nonprofit journalism center.

One of the country's most popular political columnists, his articles have appeared in dozens of publications around the world including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, The New Republic, The Nation, The Guardian, Salon, The Village Voice and Harpers.

Conason authored two New York Times best selling books, The Hunting of the President and Big Lies: The Right-Wing Propaganda Machine and How It Distorts the Truth. His last book, Man of the World, focused on the post-presidency of Bill Clinton. Coming in July 2024 is The Longest Con. A winner of the New York Press Club's Byline Award, Conason has covered every American presidential election since 1980.

He and his family live in New York City.

I read this book during the first half of November 2016. I had heard that Conason had been a detractor of Bill and Hillary Clinton, but he had come to understand the enormously positive impact the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative have had on the world, especially in Africa. It is not possible to read this book and come away unimpressed. President Clinton's detractors are many - if they know what he has accomplished, they should be ashamed; if they do not know, they should find out. Millions of people worldwide have benefited from Clinton's visions and work. Indeed many owe him their lives. I had forgotten the "clouds" that swirled around Clinton in the US after he left office. He focused on problems, most notably the AIDS epidemic, in other parts of the world because he remained in high esteem there. Then he joined with former presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush to inspire world reaction to natural disasters in Indonesia and Haiti. These efforts indulged Clinton's outsized personality ... but what was interesting, especially in light of the election of a braggart in 2016, is that he did not take personal credit, even when at least some was due. His focus was always on the people being helped, not on himself - the helper. Those out there still denigrating the Clintons and their charitable efforts should read this book ... with open minds.

It's about time someone wrote about the good work that the Clinton Foundation is doing around the world. Joe Conason's book goes into detail about several of the successful Clinton Foundation programs while also taking a critical look at those that did not pan out. This book is well researched, thoughtful, and critical when necessary. As a former development practitioner, I understand why some folks are skeptical of foundations and non-profits as there is a long history of inefficient and insufficient action when these organizations try to tackle worldwide problems like HIV/AIDS, poverty, hunger, etc. The Clinton Foundation is a different type of development organization, and it deserves praise for bringing lifesaving medicine to millions of people living with HIV/AIDS around the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who interested in learning more about Bill Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.

I love it!. I am embarrassed to say that even though I know both Bill and Hillary a bit, I had absolutely no idea about the depth and reach of the Foundation. I wish everyone would read it so they could understand the importance of reaching out to foreign governments for money: it is helping millions of people. And, beyond the Foundation, the things that Bill has been able to accomplish around the world, thanks to his established statesmanship, is astonishing.
I think Conason is an articulate writer who chooses his words well. It is delightful to read his prose.

So far, I've bought 8 additional copies to give to friends.

I have read almost everything written about Bill and Hillary Clinton. This book by Joe Conason is by far one of the best. It is neither a pro or anti Clinton book, it just tells the story as it happened a well written and entertaining narrative. It tells of problems as well as successes. President Clinton has done a lot for the entire world since leaving office and not enough people know this. The book will be one that I will give as gifts this Christmas.

I've read several books about the Clinton's. Don't usually read those that are obviously trash. This book details Bill Clinton's charitable work, clears up some of the untruths the Republicans only bother with when the Clintons put political pressure on them. Now that Hillary is out of the political picture I imagine the GOP will stop with the slandering remarks and let the Clintons live peacefully in the future. Politics has become a dirty game brought on by greed.

I found " Man of the World" to be a very engrossing and informative book. It is a pleasure to read a book about Bill Clinton that is not a hachet job. It is obvious that Conason has a close relationship with Bill Clinton and therefore provides inside information that you cannot find in any other book book about Bill Clinton. If you are a supporter of Bill Clinton this is a must read for you.

This book is captivating. I knew very little about the enormous philanthropic work of president Clinton and the Clinton foundation before I began this book. This man is really a gem.
The book maintains a good pace with scarcely any slow patches. Overall a very good read.
