Man of the World: The Further Endeavors of Bill Clinton Hardcover – September 13, 2016

4.6 out of 5 stars 80

“A rich, believable portrait of a master politician out of office: needy, rivalrous, thin-skinned, proud, hot-tempered.” —The New York Review of Books

Veteran political journalist Joe Conason brings you along with Bill Clinton, as the forty-second president blazes new paths in his post-presidential career.

It is unlike the second career of any other president: “Bill Clinton” is a global brand, rising from the dark days of his White House departure to become one of the most popular names in the world. Conason describes how that happened, examining Clinton’s achievements, his failures, his motivations, and his civilian life. He explains why Clinton’s ambitions for the world continue to inspire (and infuriate).

Conason, who has covered Clinton for twenty years, interviewed him many times for this book—as well as Hillary and Chelsea and many of his friends, aides, rivals, and supporters. He has travelled with Clinton to Africa, Haiti, Israel, and across America.

Clinton has earned tens of millions of dollars and raised billions for philanthropy, much of it from foreign sources, provoking questions about transparency and probity even as Hillary Clinton runs again for the presidency.

Conason closely examines the financial support from other countries, corporations, and wealthy individuals, while assessing the Clinton Foundation’s very real, far reaching achievements. He observes Clinton campaigning for his wife and asks: How would America’s very first First Gentleman fare in a Hillary Clinton White House?

Man of the World—starring the one and only Bill Clinton—tells the engrossing story of an extraordinary man who is still seeking to do good in the world.

Review

"Man of the World, by Joe Conason, is so valuable…[The book] offers a great deal of interesting detail and, just underneath the surface, a rich, believable portrait of a master politician out of office: needy, rivalrous, thin-skinned, proud, hot-tempered." ― The New York Review of Books

“The author's often absorbing chronicle captures the energy and charisma of the former president as he turns to the admiring global community, launching a “frantic, peripatetic career as the world's best-paid public speaker” and finding a mission in his philanthropic work in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere. . . . the book offers sharp insights . . . The author offers many telling details.” ―
Kirkus Reviews

“Conason shows his writing and research chops to full advantage in this engrossing look at former president Bill Clinton in his post-presidency years. From the book's first page—a detailed January 2001 snapshot of Clinton's first morning as a private citizen—the book grabs the reader's attention and holds on tight. . . . detailed and intimate . . . . Coming in the midst of a particularly fierce election season, this look at Clinton and his extraordinary work ethic may strike readers as almost poignant.” ―
Publishers Weekly

“This deeply researched narrative about the 16 years since Bill Clinton left office sheds light on his strengths and weaknesses.” ―
The New York Times Book Review

“A compelling portrait” ―
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I read this book during the first half of November 2016. I had heard that Conason had been a detractor of Bill and Hillary Clinton, but he had come to understand the enormously positive impact the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative have had on the world, especially in Africa. It is not possible to read this book and come away unimpressed. President Clinton's detractors are many - if they know what he has accomplished, they should be ashamed; if they do not know, they should find out. Millions of people worldwide have benefited from Clinton's visions and work. Indeed many owe him their lives. I had forgotten the "clouds" that swirled around Clinton in the US after he left office. He focused on problems, most notably the AIDS epidemic, in other parts of the world because he remained in high esteem there. Then he joined with former presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush to inspire world reaction to natural disasters in Indonesia and Haiti. These efforts indulged Clinton's outsized personality ... but what was interesting, especially in light of the election of a braggart in 2016, is that he did not take personal credit, even when at least some was due. His focus was always on the people being helped, not on himself - the helper. Those out there still denigrating the Clintons and their charitable efforts should read this book ... with open minds.

It's about time someone wrote about the good work that the Clinton Foundation is doing around the world. Joe Conason's book goes into detail about several of the successful Clinton Foundation programs while also taking a critical look at those that did not pan out. This book is well researched, thoughtful, and critical when necessary. As a former development practitioner, I understand why some folks are skeptical of foundations and non-profits as there is a long history of inefficient and insufficient action when these organizations try to tackle worldwide problems like HIV/AIDS, poverty, hunger, etc. The Clinton Foundation is a different type of development organization, and it deserves praise for bringing lifesaving medicine to millions of people living with HIV/AIDS around the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who interested in learning more about Bill Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.

I love it!. I am embarrassed to say that even though I know both Bill and Hillary a bit, I had absolutely no idea about the depth and reach of the Foundation. I wish everyone would read it so they could understand the importance of reaching out to foreign governments for money: it is helping millions of people. And, beyond the Foundation, the things that Bill has been able to accomplish around the world, thanks to his established statesmanship, is astonishing.
I think Conason is an articulate writer who chooses his words well. It is delightful to read his prose.

So far, I've bought 8 additional copies to give to friends.

I have read almost everything written about Bill and Hillary Clinton. This book by Joe Conason is by far one of the best. It is neither a pro or anti Clinton book, it just tells the story as it happened a well written and entertaining narrative. It tells of problems as well as successes. President Clinton has done a lot for the entire world since leaving office and not enough people know this. The book will be one that I will give as gifts this Christmas.

I've read several books about the Clinton's. Don't usually read those that are obviously trash. This book details Bill Clinton's charitable work, clears up some of the untruths the Republicans only bother with when the Clintons put political pressure on them. Now that Hillary is out of the political picture I imagine the GOP will stop with the slandering remarks and let the Clintons live peacefully in the future. Politics has become a dirty game brought on by greed.

I found " Man of the World" to be a very engrossing and informative book. It is a pleasure to read a book about Bill Clinton that is not a hachet job. It is obvious that Conason has a close relationship with Bill Clinton and therefore provides inside information that you cannot find in any other book book about Bill Clinton. If you are a supporter of Bill Clinton this is a must read for you.

I could have done without this book. It was interesting, but nothing really was new here given the media news that spelled out the same thing. Good writing.

This book is captivating. I knew very little about the enormous philanthropic work of president Clinton and the Clinton foundation before I began this book. This man is really a gem.
The book maintains a good pace with scarcely any slow patches. Overall a very good read.
