Managing indirect spend

Enhancing Profitability Through Strategic Sourcing

"We pay how much?!"

The story is the same at most companies. CEOs, CFOs, and other executives finally decide that it's time to take a closer look at what they pay for the goods and services required to keep their businesses running. It could be office, telecommunications, insurance, or marketing materials. Indirect spend— spending not directly tied to the creation of a finished product or service—can make up 40 percent or more of an organization's total expenses.

Providing tools to help drive savings as well as a step-by-step presentation of the strategic sourcing process, Managing Indirect Spend provides you with the knowledge and necessary tools to successfully reduce costs in the area of indirect spend. Based on the authors' more than 20 years of consulting experience, the processes and real-world examples presented in this book illustrate how to successfully implement cost reduction strategies for clients of all sizes, in just about every industry and in hundreds of spend categories.

Featuring contributions by notable sourcing professionals, Managing Indirect Spend offers in-depth discussion of:

  • Data collection and analysis

  • The best-kept secrets of procurement tools

  • Little-known free technologies that help you source more effectively

  • Scorecarding suppliers

  • What not to do during a strategic sourcing initiative

  • Office supplies and the sourcing process

  • How cell-phone management drives continuous cost savings

Moving away from the status quo can be difficult, but it is not impossible. From controlling administrative costs to managing expenses for facilities, finance, marketing, and IT, Managing Indirect Spend shows you how effectively managing indirect costs can make a huge impact on bottom-line growth. Discover ways to cut corporate costs without reducing headcount with the proven guidance found in Managing Indirect Spend.

Bill and Joe have done a nice job of putting together their combined insights and experience into a text that covers many of the fundamentals around managing indirect spend items. There are a host of different approaches, research methods, channel management strategies, RFI elements, and contract management methodologies here that are contained and which provide a great set of menu options for any category team looking at an indirect spend area. I plan on recommending this text to my MBA students at NC State who are working on indirect spend projects in my supply management class projects with our Supply Chain Resource Cooperative partners ([...]).Purchasing and Supply Chain Management

Easy to read. Great source of reference information while working on sourcing projects. First part of the book is introductions, then more advance education of what to do and what not to do, then examples about halfway through, which is where I am. The book helped my get a job in the sourcing industry. Perfect read to prepare for the interview and learn the sourcing terminology.

This recently published book on Strategic Sourcing is a must read for anyone who is charged with this key responsibility directly, or is part of the key leadership responsible for the bottom line of their organization. It is a primer for those looking to contain costs, particulary indirect spend, in the businessplace -- and is especially timely, given the challenges faced during these extraordinary economic times.

The authors' provide key insight into not only the process of Strategic Sourcing itself, but the do's and don't's, as well as the need to enlist the support and cooperation of key stakeholders, in order to maximize the benefits achieved. Each chapter provides practical insight, discusses the tools and data collection efforts this process takes to be effective, as well as the disciplined follow through on implementation of new contract terms to drive compliance and results. Practical examples as case studies from the field are also discussed.

The book is also very nicely organized for flow and content -- well done!

The authors have done an incredible job of distilling what could be a very complicated subject, and they even made the book read easily and be funny in places.

The first part is a good review of the general principles of strategic sourcing, and the next parts give practical applications on how to apply what you learned in the first section.

If you manage a budget, or are tasked with generating cost reductions in your company, this book will definitely help you find ways to find savings. Well worth the price and the time I invested into it.
