Slow start, but improves quickly.

The Manchurian Candidate was written in 1959 (I think) but it could well describe what happens today. The book takes a while to get started, but once it does, it moves quickly. One of the pleasing things about the movie of the same name made in 1962 with Frank Sinatra and Lawrence Harvey is that it follows the book quite closely. Usually when a movie is 'based' on a book, the only thing they have in common is the name. The book brings out the horror of what happened to the men of that patrol, and especially to the sgt. who was programed to kill on command and then have no memory of it. Although people have said that the book is supposed to be a political satire, there was little about it that I found satirical; rather, it was a chilling story of mind control. When Beb beats up the Korean houseboy who is actually an agent, you find yourself cheering him on. Payback of kind! I would recommend this book whether or not you subscribe to conspiracy theories or not.

This classic black and white John Frankenheimer film of a Richard Condon political thriller of the same name has been described as eerie, shocking, daring, thrilling and mesmerizing, The sophisticated political thriller which was initially from the fertile brain of Condon, a man who really knew how to write them – who collaborated with Frankenheimer – a man who really knew how to direct them—in the writing of it. It also featured an all-star cast, including Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Henry Silva and Angela Lansbury in an Oscar®-nominated performance, plus a supporting company of well-known actors.

It opens in the early 1950s, on a captured platoon of American Korean War G.I.s that somehow ended up at an American ladies garden club party. Or did it? Major Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra), an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army who served valiantly as a captain in the Korean war, can' quite remember, but bits and pieces of the experience keep coming back to him in dreams, as they do to another member of the platoon. As Marco searches for answers, he discovers threads of a murderous Russo-Chinese plot orchestrated by and for the utterly ruthless Mrs. Eleanor Shaw Iselin (Lansbury), involving her greatly damaged war hero son platoon sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey). And her senator husband John Yerkes Iselin (James Gregory), ranting about 57 Communists in the Army. (Older readers might remember Senator Joe McCarthy ranting about 57 Communists in the State Department.)

This chilling controversial film (Leonard Maltin), in which a former prisoner of war is brainwashed to create an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy may be the most sophisticated political satire ever made (Pauline Kael). It certainly continues to be only too relevant today. And what a farseeing genius Condon was. Strongly recommended.

Watch the Denzel Washington Version-but Sinatra was the one good thing in this Clinker!

If it were not for Frank Sinatra's performance-I would have shut this off. I watched both versions of the Manchurian Candidate, and I felt like I was watching a low budget movie out of the 1950's with this one.
First of all Laurence Harvey is supposed to be an American and has a distinct British accent. It made no sense.
I realize that technology and special effects are so much better now but please. Pick better actors. Angela Lansbury was shrewish and annoying and the actor who played her husband was awful. You don't have to agree with me-we are all entitled to our opinions.
There was nothing I liked other than Sinatra's performance.
It seemed like amateur hour to me. I cannot recommend it, and I love old movies- but not this one.

How about a game of solitaire?

If you haven't seen this movie, an eerie prediction of an event that happened shortly after the movie was completed, rush to get a copy. Frank Sinatra is top billing in this and it did prove he had actual acting chops, but Angela Landsbury is one of the scariest women EVER to hit the screen. VERY controversial at the time in it's depiction of some very known but not talked about conventions of the day...the idea of the actual power being the woman behind the man, mother and son relationships, mind control...incredibly portrayed. The advertising line from the original movie posters say "Don't miss the first five minutes of this movie!" You'll understand why. Lawrence Harvey plays a very sympathetic character but as all great actors can, plays it without it seeming acting: it is the person he IS in the movie. The fact that he walked into freezing water (the water had to be accessed by chopping ice pre-scene!) and act s if it were nothing is dedication to the craft. I don't want to post spoilers in this masterpiece but DO see this movie before you Wiki it. Enjoy it without knowing anything except it will haunt you and you will never look at a game of solitaire ot the queen of diamonds the same way again after viewing this gem.

Dated Story?

I was disappointed in the novel. While the idea of brainwashing and control over Raymond's action were riveting, too many of the characters were stereotypes. Johnny Iselin, a blowhard Senator, was controlled by Raymond' s mother. I get having the idea of Chinese and Russian Communists wanting to control a US president, but unless Johnny was a closet Communist, why pick him?

The Commie Threat

This book is Condon's revenge against the right-wing fringe and lingering McCarthyites. There are some differences from the film, but the basic story tracks very closely to the 1962 picture. Americans for Democratic Action must have loved this one.

I saw the movie when it was new

I didn't realize the book was written as satire until I down loaded it. I remembered the movie somewhat and liked it at the time. I thought the book would shake my memory. A good read
