Product Description

Developed to meet the needs of the most demanding professionals and photography enthusiasts who want the best in terms of performance and quality, the 055CX3 carbon fiber tripods are extremely versatile and feature an eye-catching, ergonomic design. This tripod presents outstanding qualities in terms of height, rigidity, payload and setup, offering incredible lightness thanks to the carbon fiber structure. The 055CX3 is light and compact with 3 sections, aluminum top spider die casting, aluminum center column and aluminum top plate. One of the core pillars for Manfrotto is design. With the 055CX3, all the locking collars, levers and main castings have been redesigned to allow for reliable, ergonomic and lighter tripods. The 055CX3 incorporates the use of 100% carbon fiber tubes for the legs. By using 100% carbon fiber tubes, and not mixing any other types of fiber, the quality and performance is uncompromised. High-quality “Pull-Winding” production technology has been used in order to guarantee constant high quality tube construction. The structure combines a perfect harmony between the number of layers and angle of the fiber directions to achieve an optimum balance between rigidity and compression resistance. The 055CX3 incorporates the new 3-layered rounded 100% FULL CARBON TUBES for improved rigidity and lightness. Available in 3 sections, it has an aluminum top spider, aluminum casting and top plate and tri-faceted aluminum center column with low-angle adapter.

Stability is the key strength of this tripod. If you use your camera for long exposures, very detailed work, and or heavy camera setup then you might want to get this Tripod over the other two carbon fiber tripods in the same series from Manfrotto. The reason being the PRO attachment, which allows for the vertical center column to go horizontal, is less stable than the fixed center column included with this tripod. If stability is not an issue then nothing beats the pro head in speed and convenience.

All other specifications, however, tilt in favor of the 055CX3 including more compact closed length (61cm vs 65cm) and shorter minimum height (6cm vs 11cm). The 055CX3 is basically a classic tripod design taken from previous aluminum design tripods and implemented in carbon fiber. I own a much older aluminum tripod that has the same exact dimensions and function. I never gave up on that tripod except that I wanted to upgrade to a lighter tripod and newer locking levers.

I particularly enjoy the ability to extend only one section of the two telescopic legs and then raise the center column for my desired working height. This arrangement reduces the tripod foot print and minimizes the space required for the tripod making it easier to get closer to objects with prime lenses for close up photography such as food detail for example. Overall I am very happy with this tripod

I'm a photo major in school and I have owned/used a large variety of tripods. This is the smallest tripod I would recommend for regular use. I frequently use this with both canon and nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lenses and it does the job adequately, how ever if you plan to go larger than 70-200 2.8 I would recommend a larger tripod. I have used this with a 400mm 2.8 lens (huge lens) and it was a bit wobbly and made me nervous.

Also the center column is near useless with a 70-200 2.8, I cut mine in half to save weight and still offer the extra height if i need it. Also the center column is made of aluminum not carbon fiber, probably doesn't add too much weight but good to know if you're buying this online and can't tell from the pictures.

I've learned you can't cut corners on tripods, I broke my fair share of cheap ones before I finally made the leap to this beauty and I'm very happy I did.

I use this tripod together with a Manfrotto 468MGRC0 Hydrostatic Ballhead with RC0 Quick Release (see separate review) mostly for sunset and night photography, macro photography and product photography. So it is mounted with either a Nikon D300 or D700 with grips and lenses such as 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 50, 85, 135, 180 etc. The tripod feels solid with these cameras and lenses mounted and is easy to set up and carry. I did buy a set of two AquaTech pads for it which really help. The tripod does very well for the shooting that I do. I think if you get anything heavier than a 70-200, you should look into a heavy duty tripod. For the money the Manfrotto 055CX3 Carbon Fiber 3 Section Tripod is an excellent buy. I bought mine in 2010 and it is permanently in the trunk of my car when not in use. I can recommend it highly.

I have been using Manfrotto tripods and heads for many years and they have never let me down. I have used both the aluminum version of this tripod and the carbon fiber version and I find them both to be fantastic tripods: rugged, stable and easily adjustable.

This carbon fiber version is lighter, and it absorbs the vibrations more than the aluminum version, but of course it also costs more.

The basic facts for this one are:
Maximum Height: 69.7"(177 cm)
Folded Length 24.2" (61.5 cm)
Supports 17.6 lb
3 Section Design
4 Leg Angle Settings
Flip-lock Legs
Weighs 3.9 lb
Low Angle Adapter

The low level adapter lets you get a few inches from the ground, and it is attached to the bottom of the center column for quick access.

If you are wondering what the difference is between this one and the 055CXPRO3 it is that the 055CXPRO3 model has a special feature that allows for the center column to be used in a horizontal position which lets you get into lower angles more quickly than by using the adapter on the 055CX3. The down side is that it makes the tripod about an inch longer, when folded, and in my opinion makes it a little less stable. If you're doing a lot of Macro stuff, then the 055CXPRO3 might be a better bet, otherwise I would suggest this one.

I use (a Nikon D300 w/ an assortment of f2.8, 77mm zoom lenses that are pretty heavy. I shoot semi-pro and use the rig almost every day under a variety of circumstances including a great deal of outdoor use in all kinds of conditions, frequently after a bit of a hike on wet and uneven terrain. It is essential that the tripod be light, rigid and easy to set up and this example fills the bill admirably. I've had it in constant use now for about a year and it has stood up to abuse very well.

Here's the best part though. About a month and a half ago I was shooting on a rocky beach and accidentally stepped back onto the tripod and broke one of the legs off at the upper pivot. When I got home I went to the Manfrotto website and was able to find and order just the upper tube w/ the metal pivot pre-glued to it. About 10 days later I was reassembling the tripod w/ the new part and it works just as good as new. So for $90 all in I was back in business. A big shout out to Manfrotto.
