Technical Details

Product Description

Built on the same ergonomically improved design as the 055XPROB, but without the horizontal center column feature, the 055XB is lighter in weight and slightly more compact. The ergonomics of the leg angle release mechanism and the quick action leg locks themselves have also been greatly improved. The leg angle presets allow the camera to reach all intermediate heights from min-max extension.

This tripod is missing a few features that come with the new models. It also doesn't collapse down as small. However, I care more about it being rugged and stable, so I actually prefer this cheaper, older model. If you can make space for it, then it's fine. This tripod is very sturdy and I am looking forward to using it my entire life, I really think it's the last one I'll ever own unless something crazy happens. I'm 100% satisfied with every Manfrotto product I've every purchased, it's just solid equipment.

don't have much to compare this to, except for a $30 sunpak tripod I got from best buy. This guy's expensive, especially since the head is separate, but I love this thing. It's moderate in weight (we'll see if I have to carry it far, but feels very solid. The latches are convenient, I prefer them to knobs -- we'll have to see if they remain the same tightness over time.

The vertical mount is very easy to adjust (compared to my cheapo tripod that I had to CRANK to adjust). The whole unit can get quite tall, and quite low. The default setup is a convenient height.

I love the Manfrotto 222 Joystick head I got with it -- the whole unit together feels amazingly solid!

Pricey (not by photography standards (it's not too expensive), just by normal human being standards), but cool.

Bought it bc im an amateur and needed something sturdy but not enough to break the wallet. Its a little heavy but for the price, it is right. I took it on a short hike up a small 500ft mountain/cliff/hill and it was okay on the weight. I would love to get a carbon fiber one now! would i recommend it? Yes!

Added on 10/21/2007: I posted the review below under the product 055XPROB (and it got 5 helpful votes), but amazon mistakenly moved it to 055XB (and since then it got 2 unhelpful votes). Anyway, 055XB should be a very good tripod. But I encourage you to compare it with 055XPROB, which is just a little more expensive.

Original review: It is a great, sturdy tripod. The only down side is it is a little heavy. But this is what you pay for being sturdy. Bogen/Manfrotto has changed the SKU# from 3021BPRO to 055XPROB. Look at the glowing reviews on the 3021BPRO to convince yourself.

This tripod legs are great: sturdy, versitile and very steady; but please note that for a $ 10.00 more the 055XB Classic can be 055XPROB you can pull out the center post to slide into a horizontal position, but even without the tripod legs works great as should be. It's a little heavier and has plastic parts that I would like to be more stronger and not plastic.

The other reviews about this tripod being heavy are indeed accurate. It is not terribly comfortable to carry around a long time, but you should know that going in. If you're looking for a quality tripod to protect your valuable DSLR with a lot of adaptability, without paying an arm and a leg for the high end lightweight models, then the 055XB is the way to go. You have a ton of options in heads to go with from Manfrotto, so choosing this as your base will give you a lot to work with.

I've had the 'Manfrotto 055XB Classic Tripod' for some years now and have always been satisfied with it's utility. It's a solidly built tripod of just the right height, for me, and the, easily adjustable, leg latches have never failed to hold steady.

When I decided to take photography seriously this was my first tripod purchase and I've been using it with my 5d mkII and a variety of lenses, which together are heavy. Other reviewers have commented on the lack of a bubble, for leveling, but, even now, I don't see that as a drawback in the least. And up until now it's performed as I've needed.

Tripod is heavy, but that is good. It provides a sturdy foundation for the camera and has solid construction quality. I own 2 of these and a smaller 190XBPRO model, in addition to 2 different heads. I like Manfrotto products they make reliable equipment.
