Top Customer Reviews
The 190XPROB has the disadvantage of being less rigid and not capable of being raised as high as the 055XPROB. I am 6 feet tall and I have to bend over slightly when I use the 190XPROB and I don't have to do that when I use the 055XPROB. I still prefer the 190XPROB in many circumstances when it would be inconvenient to use something as large and heavy as the 055XPROB.
I highly recommend purchasing this 190XPROB tripod as either a primary travel tripod or as a complement to a studio tripod such as the 055XPROB.
I was worried that the 190XPROB can handle a max 11 lbs while the 055XPROB can go upto 17 lbs. Frankly, if you have a standard camera gear and are not into sports or wildlife photography where you need the bulkier zoom lenses, the 190XPROB should handle you camera, lens and Speed light. The benefit of not having to carry 1.3 lbs extra with the 055XPROB is well worth the drawback of not being able to handle 17 lbs. Plus, if you have the money to shell out close to $2000 on those zoom lenses, you shouldnt be looking at a beginner/intermediate tripod and look for a carbon fiber one instead....lol
For those of you who are less than 6 feet tall and wondering if the 48 inches height with center column down is too short, the answer is NO. Considering the you add the ballhead (another 4-5") and the camera another 4-5"(higher if you have a battery grip), the viewfinder of the camera should come at around 56" which is right at eye level for the majority. If you are taller than 6 feet, I think you are better off taking the 055XPROB and consider the added weight as a advantage to it being a solid tripod :-) I would definitely visit the local store (Wolf Camera, Ritz etc) to check out the tripods in person and see if the heights and weights suit you.
For all you landscape photograph enthusiast with an UWA lens, the Manfrotto center column is an added bonus because you can extend it horizontally outward and avoid photographing the tripod legs when you go to those ultra wide angles eg.10mm. Please make sure you position your legs correctly inorder to balance the center of gravity now shifting ourwards. There is an option to add a counterweight on a hook near the tripod head for better stability.
Overall, this is a solidly built tripod and serves most of my needs. It should last a while based on other reviews, but for a casual photographer/hobbyist, this should meet most of your expectations. Now, with a good head, it is not light (5.5 lbs) but should be a manageable weight. If weight is your major concern, go with the 190XPROB, if not, then I would recommend the 055XPROB for the added weight capacity and height.
Good Luck with your search
The build quality of the tripod is fantastic. It is sturdy, made of aluminum and feels great in my hands. Setting up was was completely intuitive; exactly how I had seen in several YouTube videos. In order to avoid compatibility problems, I installed a brand new Manfrotto 496/RC2 ball head with a quick release plate. It fitted like a glove.
The tripod is solid and stable and even has a hook to add some weight if you are taking pictures in a rugged areas, in the ocean with waves or high above an area with heavy winds. Otherwise, I don't anticipate any problems of the tripod supporting my Canon DSLR EOS Rebel T2i camera and my large and heavy Canon ultra-zoom Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 II lens.
I even found out that the tripod had a convenient bubble to aid in correctly balancing the tripod. This little detail speaks highly of the Manfrotto Italian brand.
I had some problems with the seller of this item. I understand the tripod was an open box display unit, but brand new store stock. I have an issue with this policy. When I buy a new product with a price tag of over $200, I expect it to be received in a sealed box from the manufacturer and not in a carton box which has been repackaged by the seller after being used in a photography fair.
When I opened the carton box, I noticed that the official Manfrotto gray box was not inside. In addition, one small screw fell to the floor and I had to install it to the top platform of the tripod on the center column. At this moment, there are three holes and only two screws, which means that there is a missing screw. I don't what they're for, since the product was received without a User's Manual or an Operating Manual. I don't understand why the manuals were not included.
After contacting the reseller, E.P. Levine, LLC headquartered in Waltham, MA I found out that they would send the manuals directly to my computer via PDF files and would also mail the missing screws and original screws to the address in Panama where I'm currently staying. The PDF file was sent to my computer as promised.
Regarding above inconveniences, seller spokesperson commented as follows:
"We very often purchase demo units from Manfrotto, they usually have been opened at a trade show and packed up again. It carries the full warranty from Manfrotto."
In my opinion this is not right and customer should be informed about this policy before they place an order. I for one, would not have purchased this tripod if I had known it was used in a trade show and later repackaged. I conveyed this message to E.P. Levine, LLC. For this reason I did not rate it with five stars.
Other than this irritation, I'm very happy with this acquisition and should be using it on Sunday evening to take pictures of Panama City's exquisite skyline.
