The 438 is fitted between tripod and head and provides easy, fast leveling for tripods without built-in leveling mechanisms. Its range of movement is 10°. This replaces the Bogen Manfrotto 3502.

Tip: my unit arrived a little stiff, so stiff in fact that I thought is was damaged. The internal oils take a while to work loose. Keep that in mind before taking it out on your first shoot.
I can't say whether or not it's worth the price. Obviously you're paying for durability, and all I can say is that it does feel very sturdy. Every component is made of very durable metal, apart from the lever, which is hard plastic (still feels tough). I honestly don't plan on buying another tripod for years and years, and I do at least feel safe knowing that the chances of my 438 breaking are very, very low.
My advice is to only buy if you plan on using it for an extremely long time, like I hope to. If not, go cheaper.
It makes it MUCH easier to level out. It does add some height to the setup (about 2 inches) and a little weight. I do not have exact weight numbers but I do not have an ultralight setup as it was before. I wanted it sturdy. I carry the whole unit strapped to the back of my Kata HB-207 GDC Hiker Backpack for DSLR system or DV/HDV camcorder. (Insertrolly optional) and it fits well. Because I carry it in the center back position that this backpack offers it does not throw the weight of center.
Overall, I am very pleased and highly recommend it if you intend to do a good bit of panorama shooting.
