Product Description

This kit is the perfect choice for many video applications. the 501HDV head takes its inspiration from our top professional video head models – a fixed counterbalance spring (set for a typical weight of camera + accessories of 2.5kg) that helps ensure both smoother tilt movements and greater equipment safety even when tilt locks are inadvertently left off. The easy-to-reach on/off switch allows the counterbalance system to be disengaged or re-engaged for different filming setups. Ergonomic design with locks and knobs that allow a more solid grip and better fingertip control and separate pan and tilt locks make this extremely easy to use. A quick release camera plate and repositionable pan bar allow adjustment for the most comfortable and safe use. The tripod features a classic twin leg design that extends up to a height of 59". The mid level spreader assures stable and safe set ups. The Manfrotto 501HDV, 546B tripod kit was my choice of tripod after having experience with it at college. This tripod has met and exceeded my expectations. If you want to do video work, it's important to have a robust, rugged tripod and smooth head.

I'll begin with the head, the 501HDV. The head is fully adjustable, featuring both pan and tilt locks and tension adjustments. If you need to do a slower pan or tilt, simply increase the friction, and the head requires a little more force to move. There is absolutely zero play in the head. All movements are extremely smooth.

The 546B sticks are as impressive as the head. The spreader is removable, as are the feet. If you are raising the top section of the legs, the footprint stays the same, making it easy for a single person even, to raise or lower the tripod. The only trouble I've had with these legs is the locks have been loose a couple of times recently, but this can be fixed with a hex wrench small adjustment. But this is part of the beauty of these sticks - how you can tighten them up on your own.

The bag is excellent, it's rugged and it looks really professional carrying it around. The kit altogether is very lightweight. It's not carbon fiber, but you'll be surprised just how light it is. Often, I lift it, video camera attached, with one hand to move it. The bowl attachment for the head means you can level the camera alone in seconds, where without a bowl, you'd need to adjust your leg height.

This tripod has served me well filming both events and independent films. It has been one of my best investments because of how reliable it is and how much I use it. I would recommend it to any of my colleagues without hesitation.

I just got this setup being a little apprehensive about putting too much weight on it. But literally the day after i got this, i was called to a set at The School of Visual Arts in New York where they used the same set, and i can tell its been abused, and there's been WAY more than the recommended weight on it for years. So dont worry. Plus, the counter-balance on the tripod is a life saver... i didn't know exactly what it was at first, but after putting a rig on it, it became totally useful.

great legs,
....but takes a little more time to setup & level.
might be a little cumbersome to take & setup on run & gun gigs.

I think it's still better than "twist lock".

great head, fluid/smooth for the money

great bag, great build quality

I would recommend it.

After getting my Panasonic DVX100B camera last year, I always knew I would be using the Manfrotto tripod brand because their equipment has always been reliable to me over the years! As a Videographer & Final Cut Pro editor learning is an EVERYDAY PROCESS! Since purchasing the Manfrotto 501HDV tripod, all I have to say is amazing!!! This tripod is sturdy, strong and smooth in its camera movements. Not only does it support my DVX100B but also my 8ft Kessler Crane too - OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!

The price was great! I'm also planning to purchase an extra 501HLV Fixed Pan Bar and 127VS Variable Spread Video Dolly. With a new production in development plus some new test shots to do - lot's of production value coming my way!!!!
What are you waiting for? Get this tripod TODAY!
