The Compact Action is the best choice for owners of entry level DSLRs with standard kit lenses who like to shoot a lot of photos and movies. The ergonomic joystick head with scroll-wheel locking mechanism is very intuitive and easy-to-use. Its comfortable grip allows you to capture smooth movies and great images with little effort. The innovative circular quick release plate is perfect for effortless camera attachment by hand without any need for coins or screwdrivers. Thanks to its shape, camera orientation will never be an issue again. Simply close the lever just above the joystick handle. In addition, the Regulating Dial, together with the round quick release plate allows you to perfectly adjust every camera to the tripod thereby enhancing its stability. Last but not least, the photo-movie selector allows maximum freedom in any circumstance. Switching to the desired mode only takes a second and ensures you always obtain great photos and smooth movies. For more information please refer to the product instruction manual. It comes with a carry bag which is nice. It's not just thin nylon it has adequate thickness and padding but it has a drawstring. It would have been cool if it had a zipper and a shoulder strap. Not sure how much money they saved there. Overall happy with it but the way people talk about manfrotto as high quality im not seeing it here. Sure they have higher quality more expensive tripods but i didnt expect them to skimp on this one. Dont get me wrong this is worth the money just expected better. The legs easily collapse almost too easy. Locking buckles work good the switch knob feels like it will snap off. We'll see how the whole thing holds up after some use.
It’s aluminum: Durable, but lightweight. I can lift it with my pinky. It does a decent enough job of holding up a basic camera, but if you’re using a heavy DSLR or any sort of bigger rig, make sure no one bumps into it. The officially-supported maximum load capacity is only 3.3 pounds.
My Panasonic G7 is super lightweight and fits perfectly on this tripod. The overall product compacts to a super small form factor, but actually gets surprisingly tall. The adjustment latches for the legs are tight, but easy to use. The rubber feet keep it in place and take up very little space. This has been my favorite tripod to put in tight spaces when I need crazy shots.
With that in mind, the main column can actually be removed and flipped upside down. Now, it’s pretty difficult to maneuver a full DSLR or mirrorless between the 3 legs, but you do have the option.
The rest of the tripod head is pretty abysmal, though. It has a pistol-style grip with a scroll-wheel locking mechanism that gives me very little confidence. It’s easy enough to use, but no re-assurance it’s locked in place.
The “quick release plate” is just a tiny circle with the quarter-20 thread on it. It has a latch system that is very quick to lock and release, but that “plate” is absurdly easy to use.
The head has a full range of motion in photo mode. The “video mode” switch is supposed to lock it horizontally to allow for smooth pans, but mine appears to be broken. I guess this is why the original owner returned it, because it doesn’t lock anything, not that the motion with the grip is particularly smooth enough for video anyway.
Overall, this is a fantastic tripod not just for budget uses, but for those who need a super portable or tight-quarters tripod. As long as you’re not too over the weight limit, it’s pretty sturdy, even when the legs are close together. This has been a must have for a lot of my shooting situations and I’ve gotten some neat shots with it.
My review probably does deserve the 0 out of 2 helpful rating so I'll update for the sake of any prospective buyers.
After owning this tripod for a while and buying 2 others, I can definitely say that there ARE better tripods available for under $70. If that's your budget, check out Dolica, they make great stuff in the $50 range.
Increase your budget a little more to $120 and check out ProAm USA's heavy duty tripod. The build quality is epic and it'll support 80lbs without flinching. It's not even that heavy to carry around.
In regards to this manfrotto tripod, I am a fan of the pistol grip. It works quite well and is ergonomic. Due to my increasing photo and video equipment arsenal, this tripod has unfortunately been relegated to back up duty. It just isn't beefy to give me the support that I need but that's no fault of its own.
I do feel that it, like most other Manfrotto gear, is a little over priced considering what else is available on the market.
Only other legitimate gripe about this tripod and its design is the camera mount. It's basically a small circular locking pin of sorts that screws into your camera and then locks into the pistol grip. Pics attached. It's small and easy to lose. Lose it and the tripod is useless unless you buy a replacement mounting pin.
