I don't know what those people are putting on the end of their camera, but not only did this hold DSLR and a large 17-270 zoom lens, it holds my main Sony FS-100 with it's lens, shotgun mic and my wireless mic receiver. This has to be close to 9 lbs. It's sitting here next to me and I'm amazed that it's doing what it's doing.
If you have a DSLR and are worried about this being able to support. DO NOT WORRY!
I've used with Canon t5i with 50mm lens, 70-300mm lens, and 24mm lens. Also used with GoPro and various cell phones. It has not let me down so far. You could pay less for a tri-pod like this, but it wouldn't be of such good quality, like this Manfrotto.
It's worth buying a couple of them, if you have use for multiples at once.
The entire unit is only about 7 1/4" long when closed. It stands about 5" tall. The info explains that it will only hold 2.2 pounds, and that most pro equipment weighs over that amount. However, like I said above, I am completely comfortable using this. But, it's up to you. This is typical Manfrotto equipment. Built for use and built to last.
Holds a pretty heavy camera + lens combo
Not a 90 degree head
Obviously not a Video panning-tilting tripod
No Bubble Level
Legs have only one practical position.
Bottom Line: It's a Manfrotto for $24. Most of that price is the name "Manfrotto." I have a Joby GorillaPod Action and it comes with a 90 degree head, bubble level, and two quick detach heads for Threaded Screw or GoPro, and the legs articulate to uneven surfaces well, However, it will not hold a Camera/Lens combo as big as this Manfrotto will. Nor is it as attractive.
I'm docking it one star for the lack of 90 degree support. This would have been very easy to implement, mill notches into the sides of the socket to have two 90 degree locations. It's really simple and an oversight by Manfrotto. Plus since this is obviously not a video tripod, it makes having a 90 degree more of a necessity since that is a common photography position than in video. I'm not sweating the lack of a level, that's more of an observation, (since many cameras have a level function in the display to assist with leveling). But the legs and head are definitely not as versatile as a Joby GorillaPod at the same price point.
If you go up to $30, you can get full pan/tilt video heads with extending legs on tabletop tripods. So like I said before, most of the price is in the Manfrotto name and logo, and the sturdy and attractive design. I still give it 4 stars cause I'm a brand snob.
