Francesca Taymon is a young attorney. She's a hard working, good girl. Her life has been forever altered by the tragic death of her sister. Cade Kelling is a bad boy, an alcoholic. The two met in high school and both fell in love (although neither recognized their feelings until years later). Years later they are brought back together when Cade's father hires Francesca to represent him with his latest legal trouble.
Their feelings for one another are still there and it's not long before they act on them, but Cade's drinking comes between them. Addiction is heartbreaking. It destroys people, relationships, lives. Both Francesca and Cade have stunted maturity levels due to the role alcohol has played in their lives. Francesca lives half a life due to fear and feelings of loss. Cade has hidden in a bottle since his teens. Neither has ever had a real relationship, but both believe that their connection was/is something precious.
This book is special because of how it deals with the characters. Francesca is like a butterfly ready to spread her wings. You just know she has a lot of a kick ass woman hiding inside. Cade is the soul of the book. His brokenness, his dreams touch you as the reader. I love this character. The alcoholism is not brushed over. It's impact on Cade, his family, and Francesca is realized. The efforts to regain control over his life are not minimized. But he is always treated with respect. His disease is never confused with him. His brother, mom, Francesca, even his father all still see him as a man. He has failed each of them, but he is never portrayed as a failure except in his own eyes. And there is always hope. Francesca loves him. She understands and still focuses on him and them as a couple. It's touching to follow their relationship as they face their own feelings, open up with one another, and grow closer and stronger. Reading each page I felt such fear for Cade. I wanted him to succeed, but it's a daily struggle. I wanted Francesca to remain with him, but many need to walk away from addicted loved ones. It was all on the edge of heartbreaking, yet there was still such hope for a happily ever after. I love that!
Fast forward a few years and Francesca's an attorney still pretty fresh out of law school, already finding herself trapped under a sexually discriminating glass ceiling at work. By day, she struggles to build a future; by night, she struggles with the past.
The years have not been as kind to Cade, who is still just what he's always been - an alcoholic troublemaker. But when Cade steps into Francesca's office, that changes everything - for both of them. Past and future collide when Cade becomes Francesca's first real client.
This story ... *insert conflicted sigh here* ... I don't have a solid review. Just like with most books, there were errors missed in editing, and some were a little distracting. The characters, especially Francesca, often acted in ways that I felt were unrealistic. These are down points for me, for sure.
Then again, the story was incredibly well planned, the back story between the characters felt solid and believable, and I liked that the side characters never stole the show. The author's portrayal of alcoholism through the character of Cade Kelling was spot on, and I loved the way his love for Francesca inspired and motivated him to finally change his ways.
And the fact that "Francesca Taymon" is so like the author's name, "Felicia Tatum", gives me a smile despite myself - and it tells me how very much this story must mean to this author personally.
My overall impression (that's sticking with me days after I actually finished reading) is that this is a really sweet story with characters that are completely relatable even when they aren't being entirely logical. And I can't help myself: I loved Cade's redemption.
This book lost a star for the presence of so many errors, but I am already planning to read Entangled Souls, which is the rest of Francesca and Cade's story. But it's still a high four stars.
