The RS-232 Serial Comm protocol is rapidly fading into obsolescence. The only products that seem to still be using it are specialty electronics that don't have much presence in the general consumer market. But if you do still have a device or two that uses a 9-pin RS-232 connector, and a laptop PC that doesn't have an RS-232 serial port (and most of the newer laptops don't) then this adapter will do the job. I personally use it with a 15 year old Summagraphics CADD Digitizing Tablet, and a 10 year old Garmin Model 168 GPS/Depth sounder.
NOTE: This adapter comes with a 3.5" CD with drivers on it. Either store this CD in a place you can remember, or copy the contents to a hard disk. This adapter will not work without the drivers on that CD, so don't lose it!
