I wanted to specifically write this review because I see confusion in the reviews for this product. See the little arrows on the sides of the air filter? When installing it, be sure that the arrows point DOWN. That's the way of the air flow. The air in brought in from the top and flows down. Some people have made the arrows point up, but that is an incorrect installation. Just wanted to point this out. Will that make a HUGE difference? No, but may as well install this correctly.
The only confusion was that we didn't see any arrows stamped on the filter to indicate which side is "up" - there was just some writing from Mann so we put it in where the words were right side up (readable direction, not upside down) until we find out for sure which way it goes. There is a darker side and a lighter side, not sure which direction is correct orientation for the air flow. Does anyone know?
Anyway, this filter seems much more solid than the OEM cabin filter from the MINI dealership - we had acquired one of those at first and then found a link to this filter on a MINI Cooper online forum. Returned that one and saved $21 on the filter (and saved way more by installing it ourselves instead of having the dealership do it).
A great lesson here for two businesses - first for the dealership - if they are to remain competitive, they must change their pricing model and second for the brick and mortar stores - you guys need to catch up with service or you'll be out of business.
This was my first go and replacing my cabin air filter by myself. The shipment arrived quickly, and even came with instructions for the first-timer. It's pretty basic, and even more straight forward than I thought. There aren't even any screws to remove. The supplied instructions give an estimate of 18 minutes. It took me 9. The majority of the time was spent trying to unclasp the cover from under the glove box. Basically, I was being too gentle, and just needed to really pry the two clasps apart with some force. But the passenger foot-well light near the air filter cover didn't help too much (it sorta of is in the way). Needless to say, now that I've done it myself, the next time will be less than 5 minutes.
One other tidbit of info for first-timers, is that I thought the filter was just just placed in flat. There is actually a wavy groove (S-wave) that the filter slides into. It slides in pretty easily though.
Also, as is the case with another reviewer, I wasn't exactly sure which way was the correct way for the air flow. I should have looked at the filter I removed, to see which way Mini had theirs installed (which, by the way, was basically identical to this one -- it was even a Mann-Filter, both made in Germany). I ended up installing it so that the end pieces of the filter "v" pattern were facing toward the sky. So, it basically looks like this \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ and NOT like this: /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\. After some research, it appears that was correct.Read more ›
