A Sophisticated Horror Story

Ms. Salpeter's The Mannequins was an unexpected treat. While many horror books rely on lots of predictable slasher/gore material to deliver a shock to the reader, The Mannequins provides a jolt of true creepiness through masterfully fleshing out common fears. I've heard several people mention the creep factor of dolls, but to take that fear and build on it, and craft a novel around mannequins? Well, that's just genius. Imagine entering an alternate reality ruled by a sinister rogue simply called the Preacher. If you displease him, he'll turn you into a mannequin, trapped within your own body and aware of it! Ms. Salpeter's writing shines when she captures the atmosphere of the house as well as the desperation of the characters trapped inside. Especially enjoyable were the broad range of characters in this novel. Far from cookie cutter, they were true to life and very likeable. There were several I found myself invested in during the course of the novel, and before I knew it, I was repeatedly telling myself "Ok, one more chapter" just to avoid getting out of bed and turning off the light! This story is more cerebral than most books in the horror genre, and I've checked her blog and know she has a horror anthology, Rickett Row, coming out this summer. If you're looking for a new author in the horror genre, I heartily recommend Ms. Salpeter.

I've read other books by this author and this particular book left me sleepless for many nights. My mind is vivid and Ms. Salpeter's abilities to tell a tale left me hanging on each page, wanting to put it down so I could get my breath, but unable to because I feared for the characters. There wasn't a myriad of chapters to development the theme, she had you at the beginning and didn't let go until the last page. Many nights I lie awake wondering what is read, what is imagination - it doesn't matter, my heart still skips a beat when a shadow moves. Thank you, Ms. Salpeter for a very enjoyable, hauntingly delightful scare without all the superfluous and gratuitous gore. I love when somebody plays with my brain, you did a great job.

ELYSE - I hope you read this.

You need to go back and proofread/edit this book.

1. In places, you're telling, not showing.
2. Some grammatical/spelling issues.
3. Timeline issues. The book opens with the idea that with Jack and his friends, it started 15 years ago. Later on, one of the long-timers - Babs I believe? Notes that it should be 2014 now. Hold on - are we now 15 years into the future?
4. The Preacher - he's very one-dimensional. I mean, yes, he's the villain, but he's like an overgrown spoilt Draco Malfoy in a frock. The other characters were similarly not as well developed, except probably for Jack. He shows the most development.

It was at this point I had to stop reading. Maybe one day in the future I'll pick it up again. The idea is amazing. Hopefully, once you go back and give it a good rework, I'll be able to start over and truly enjoy this book.

Since I love horror fiction, I bought The Mannequins to take for a spin. I wouldn't say that it's scary - lots of stories with vampires and werewolves and ghosts are simply scary - but instead, this novel has elements that are down-right disturbing. The author has penned an ingenious tale that will climb inside your mind and haunt your dreams. Picture yourself trapped in a world from which there is seemingly no escape, and being subject to a madman who holds your very life in the palm of his hand. That is the place where this book holds you captive. It's entertaining, imaginative, and impossible to put down. From the first page on, you'll find yourself trapped in the world of The Mannequins!

This was such a creepy story! From the people turned into mannequins, to the town with no way out, to the Preacher who apparently can't be killed and whose main source of entertainment is the suffering of his prisoners, this story was chilling. I was constantly regretting that I'd read this right before bed! If you're looking for a horror story that will keep you turning the pages, this one is for you.

An interesting and different story. My main qualm with it is that it is not particularly well written - it lacks a certain finesse and descriptive style in it's writing. The plot is quite good though and I enjoyed the split perspective of flashbacks throughout the piece. I would have given this book 4 stars until I got to it's ending - it's quite anti-climatic and a bit dull which was disappointing.

An alright read and a stand-alone story, just not very well-written and a bad ending lets it down.

15 years they spent on the other side? Then all of a sudden, with little to no effort, they're out and everyone is free and it's over??? This had so much potential!!! What an amazingly terrifying yet Doctor Who -esque concept of Mannequins trapped in a mansion in a world where time passes like normal outside but can be frozen within the walls! Touch a mannequin become a mannequin, the mirrors.... it was a short novel but could have been turned into a longer novel and made breathtakingly terrifying.

Great story, weak ending.
