This book is one of my favorites. It is so valuable to understanding biblical culture. I've bought copies for my friends. In an A to Z format, you can learn about customs, measures, money, musical instruments, neighboring cultures and traditions. It has greatly enhanced my understanding of parables, as well as implied overstepping of traditions and consequences that occurred in the Bible.

I have often wondered how people in Bible times lived. I was curious as to how they dressed and how they cooked their food. I also often wondered if the figurative language in the Bible were often rooted in common everyday realities that I cannot relate to because I know nothing of their ancient culture. This is what pushed me to buy this book and I have not been disappointed.
I point to just one of Bible's most enduring illustrations: the potter and the clay. In this book, I found a description of how an ancient potter worked a piece of clay. It was an arduous and painstaking task from the point of view of the potter. But from the point of view of the clay, it is pure torture. Knowing the cultural background of how an ancient potter makes a clay pot gives me insight into the illustration of how God is a potter and we are clay in his hands.
I enjoyed this book and it helped make the Bible become more alive to me. The words on the printed page ceased to be just ink marks: they are now pictures in my mind thanks to this book.

I believe this book is very important to the bible student,It is important in the sense that it gives us the detail that the bible doesnt,I believe every bible student should own one to fully understand the culture back then, also to make the proper interpretation,so we can have the correct application. This is very Important today where there are alot of wrong intepetations, and alot of ones own ideas about the bible,We have to understand what the books meant to the biblical audience.

This book does adequately address the topic at hand. Drs. Tenney and Packer are recognized scholars. The book has the same flavor and formatting (including black and white pictures) as Dr. Tenney's other work the Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible. This reference work reads very similar to the encyclopedia yet has a different purpose and hence different "entries" if you will. Dr. Tenney explains it this way in the preface, "[This work] is designed to make the necessary information available. . . It is not the purpose of this book to deal with academic problems, but rather to present in plain terms the information that is most helpful in interpreting the Bible accurately. Particular attention is given to the content of the New Testament." While this does seem true as you are reading through the book there is also a great deal of helpful information regarding the Old Testament as well. The sections on the kings in particular really helps you to build an accurate chronology and dating system. The information provided about the different cultures leading up to the New Testament times is very thorough and archeological evidence is also given. Some sections I feel are really not needed. For instance, if you have picked up this book you probably don't need 43 pages worth of brief outlines of each book of the bible and authorship etc. Overall, you are bound to pick up a few facts for any Bible study (not that you couldn't get them elsewhere, especially with a number of good study bibles now on the market) and the price is not bad ($15). I think that with the level of scholarship of Drs. Tenney and Packer give this book the edge over other similar products. I would be less enthusiastic about this product if lesser known names were attached.
