I have been truly inspired by Joel McMains work and believe McMains to be the forefront expert in his field of work His techniques should be standardized as national and worldwide application. It is evident that Joel's deep passion, love for canines and the depth and breadth of his experiences lend to the sound logic, sensibility, and entertaining information and experiences shared in this powerful book. He emphasizes the importance of the human canine bond and encourages the building of rapport to ensure a loyal, devoted and accountable dog. Throughout the book, Joel use clear, concise, frank and emphatic language; all the while truly appreciating the dogs' intellect, ability to learn and the individuality each possessed by each dog. His respect and adoration of canines is fully expressed, in a way that is shared with his experiences and approach regarding the human-canine bond. I have used his techniques with all five of my dogs. The result is: when I have quests, who generally seem trepidatious about meeting them, they soon find themselves in a situation surrounded by four (five is still a pup) well-trained dogs sitting while the guest(s) enter the home. Released once the guest is comfortable, they avoid overwhelming anyone. It is rare with the four older dogs that I even have to correct a behavior.
I have had the opportunity to meet Joel and partake in his basic obedience course. I was inspired immensely to be more compassionate, understanding and flexible in my approach to each of my dogs, as individuals, and by giving them the personal attention daily to establish a deep, unique and transparent relationships with each dog. I was challenged to be more conscientious, consistent, firm and learned how to establish rapport at a level that produced vast results with little to no treats. The dogs respect me, listen to me and obey me. I can control the four dogs with body language and simple commands. Our relationships are harmonious, full of respect and trust, open and full of passion and delight due to applying Joel's consistent methods with slightly varied approaches based on the individuality of each dog. This mainly occurred as a result of establishing rapport with each dog. I learned nearly the entirety of what I know and continue to apply from Joel's books. I wouldn't have it any other way as his knowledge, experience, training techniques and depth of his understanding of the canine species is top-notch and is significantly more sound, reasonable, and understanding of canine behavior than ANY of the other dog books, dog trainers or animal behaviorists I have read, met and/or have worked with in the past.
While I have decided not train my new GSD to be a protection dog, I will continue to apply his methodology with training my new dog and am currently rereading Canine Logic. I will read all the way through his books as I get to grow with this amazing pup!!

I think the author shares some very good knowledge of what a protection dog
should be and the liability you face when you own one. He pointed things out
to me that I never even thought of. Good book for someone entering into
training protection dogs or someone thinking of getting one.
