I can do low-bar squats without any pad, but I simply cannot find a good bar position for high-bar squats that does not press on my upper back or neck vertebrae. So I use the Manta. It seems perfectly shaped for my upper back region and is very comfortable. Why suffer or damage your back ?!?!? Although it does raise the bar slightly, It seems to make a negligible difference to the squat mechanics.
I also have the $12 rubber version of a "Manta" from one of the copycat vendors, and to tell you the truth, it is almost as good. The rubber version is pretty dense rubber, like a basketball or football might be made of, so it is more flexible, but still pretty stiff and functions quite well. Both a virtually exactly the same shape. This real Manta grips the bar much tighter and looks like it will last longer. So it is definitely "better"; but is it enough better to pay 4X the cost ? Tough question. Functionally, they both achieve the same result for me.
This simple device removes that pain.
I got this in the mail, 2 days after I ordered it. I was surprised.
Not UPS, not FEDEX, the mail.
It was in my mail box, at the front door!
And it still had room for the weekly junk mail in the mailbox! hahaha
I opened it, and at first I thought... it was a joke.
it seemed so small. I though maybe I did not choose the right size. this looked like it would fit a small child, not a man.
I snapped in on my bar in the cage, and got under it. the picture shows the back of it.
the front has 2 small 'wings' that fit over the top of your traps.
Just putting it on with no bar,
it looks stupid, as if it was for a child. (I got big traps).
But snapping it on the bar, and then letting it rest on the traps, it feels great.
I proceeded to load the bar to 275 lbs, just to try it out, did not want to go heavy it was not a leg day....
I love it. it don't matter if you do regular squats, sumo's etc, its a real back and neck saver.
hummm...all these years I have seen this thing, wondered about it, and never got it.
its a staple for the gym bag.
