Great book for me, but may not be really appropriate for the layman

I purchased this book for my partner who is new the tropical fish keeping. I found the book to be very informative, but I don't feel the book may be 100% appropriate for the layman. My partner who doesn't have a strong background in biology/environmental science found it to be academic and a chore to read. The language may be a bit thick for some audience members.

I also have 15+ years experience with the hobby and a strong background in biology/environmental science. I really enjoy this type of book - its very detailed, good descriptions, great pics and diagrams - plus the information on the environment was a pleasure to read. I found it really completes the book.

I won't be surprised if the book ends up on my bookshelf from his. I have a strong background in science, research and reviewing scientific literature so I really enjoy the document. Actually, it really makes me wish I had taken some ichthyology courses!!

The book is loaded with lots of photos and drawing to help the reader identify medical problems on fish. The book also shows very clearly the physiology of fish without getting into overly scientific language. This book is a valuable addition to my 'fish' library.

I like that this book is more focused at experienced aquarist who want to further their understanding rather than people who are completely new to the hobby. I also like that it is a heavy read relative to other aquarium books, In some places I felt like I was reading a microbiology textbook. Its all around aquarium health info but it has a big section on fish health. It has a lot of detailed pictures for identifying fish sicknesses, and is actually kind of gross, but I have never seen a book with so much info on the topic and I think that is its strongest point. The weakest point is there isn't much on plants which to me is just as important as the fish, I guess that's a different book.

The book is pretty good for most aquarists as all should have something to help with the diagnostics and treatment of their pets. There's some pretty good photography of various diseases that simplifies the text, and in each section there is a little box of explanation of a point in the text, be it a bacteria type or similar. Where the book falls slightly short in my opinion is in the treatment section. I would not advocate the use of all the chemicals in this chapter and some may well be impossible to obtain for most people. In this case, I would recommend using the book then visiting a professional fish keeper, specialist shop or vet with your diagnosis after consulting the treatment section to see if there is an alternative.

All said and done anything that can help easy diagnosis and lead to the correct treatment of fish disease is a good thing.

This book is complete, concise, and clear. It is full of photos and diagrams and provides all the information necessary to truly understand how to provide tropical fish with the proper environment. That is the key to avoiding stress which is often the trigger of many diseases. Since reading this book I have not had one sick fish in my 120 gallon community tank. They all appear happy and healthy. I have dozens of tropical fish books. This is my favorite. Get this book. You won't be sorry.

Love the easy way the author explains how the cycle of the disease accelerates (not just white spot, but most of the main fish diseases)what to look for, and how early diagnosis is the key to success. However, like me, we don't all have a laboratory at hand !! so this book helps us enormously. How to treat, what to use, the time period, temperature etc, its all in this book, its next to my tanks, wouldn't be without it, it also teaches the importance of tank hygiene and not overfeeding, one of the main reasons why an aquarium becomes a poor environment for its inhabitants.
