My husband has a first gen iPad and has a great, simple case for his. I was looking for something similar and feel like I've been researching forever. I finally settled on this case and, initially, it seemed to fit the bill - and the price is perfect. However, it has one extra feature that makes it useless to me.... the option to fold the front flap back to put it into typing mode. To be able to add that feature, the case has a bendable crease on the flap that covers the front of the iPad. No big deal if you primarily want to use it in typing mode - or plan to use the stand feature on a sturdy flat surface (like a table). The biggest thing I was looking for was the ability to have the case in the stand feature and to use it on my lap while sitting on the couch. Because of the crease, the stand constantly tries to fold up on itself and the iPad slips out of the groove. Frustrating! I tried it out for 2 days and by the end of the second, was ready to just throw the whole thing out the window. Sadly, I have returned it and am on to searching for something different.
On the plus side, all of the cutouts fit perfectly, the magnetic on/off switch worked well, the case was of decent quality and held the iPad snugly, and the screen cleaning cloth was a nice bonus (I didn't use the screen protector, but if you're looking for one, that's another nice bonus for the price). But, it just wasn't right for my needs.
This case does fit the next generation iPad (aka iPad 3), which this review is based on, as I just got my iPad 3 with LTE.
The case fits snuggly. In fact the lid is a little difficult to close (annoyingly so), but I expect that to change as the case stretches out. The camera lens cut out is not perfectly centered on the lens, but is not obstructed. The speaker grille cut out is slightly covered by the corner of the case but doesn't really mute the sound as far as I can tell. All other buttons and ports are perfectly accessible. This case also has a built in magnet for the automatic wake feature which works best when the case is fully closed...something that as I said, is sort of difficult to do at the moment.
I like this particular style of case because it's not flashy and works great for couch lounging with the iPad. Just prop it up on your chest and it's comfortable to use. It provides enough protection so if the iPad falls onto the floor, you don't really have to worry about. It also maintains a relatively thin profile, something other folio cases fail at. Finally, the iPad's bezel is not covered which is a requirement of mine for a case.
I docked a star because the cut outs could be better and it's just a little too difficult to close right now. I also tested this particular case with my iPad 2, and it's the same results as above. So for the price I paid, it's at 4 stars.
It's also worth noting, I bought this case on March 14th for $13.99 and I'm shocked to the price today, March 16th, to be $17.99. For $14, it's definitely worth the price. For $18 I'd probably take away .5 stars. Anymore than that and you're pushing it.
Now for what it COULD have been....I have a similar case for my Kindle fire, but the leather of the kindle case covers teh black border of the tablet. Not so with this case. As you can see in the picture, it only grips your tablet by the four corners (and the sides a bit) so the edges of the tablet are exposed when it is open. Personally, I would have loved this case even more if it concealed that border a but and offered that added protection, but I can't very well fault the case for that reason.
All in all, a 5 star product. I would definitely recommend this item, especially since I got it for about $13.
