Why So Many Christians Have Left the Faith: Responding to the Deconstructionist Movement With Unshakable, Timeless Truth Paperback – March 7, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
At a time when the Bible and Christianity are considered untrustworthy, will we choose faith or follow the culture?
This book will provide you with the facts and understanding you need to respond to difficult questions biblically and stay rooted in your faith even when others seem to be abandoning theirs.
We are living in unprecedented times when Christian leaders are renouncing their faith and large numbers of believers are falling away. Is this the final apostasy prophesied by Jesus and Paul? And can we do anything to help those struggling with their faith? In Why So Many Christians Have Left the Faith, Dr. Michael L. Brown confronts the problem of “Christian deconstruction” with solid, faith-building answers and honest responses to difficult questions. He addresses:
- What the Bible says about an end-time falling away and whether that is what we are seeing in our day;
- How solidarity with and sympathy for the LGBT movement has brought with it a rejection of biblical values;
- The effect of leadership scandals on the credibility of the gospel;
- How the me-centered gospel is contributing to the current faith crisis by putting God on trial;
- The contemporary objections to the Bible’s moral standards;
- The problem of pluralism; and
- What the Bible does and doesn’t say about future punishment in hell, while also examining the scriptural statement that “God is love.”

About the author

Michael Brown is a Jewish believer in Jesus (he came to faith in 1971 as a heroin-shooting, LSD-using, hippie rock drummer) and he holds a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Literatures from New York University. He's written more than 40 books, including wake-up calls to the Church of America, scholarly monographs and commentaries on biblical subjects, a series of volumes on answering Jewish objections to Jesus, and much-discussed books on today's hottest cultural issues. He has spoken throughout America and in more than 30 countries, and he hosts the nationally syndicated, daily talk radio show The Line of Fire. He is the founder and president of FIRE School of Ministry in Concord, NC and serves as a visiting or adjunct professor at a number of seminaries. - Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2023I read this book to be equipped to express to anyone the hope that I have in Christ. This book is concise in explaining the problems, reasons and solutions. Dr. Brown expresses his thoughts with clarity. And his chapters and supporting source notes are well organized. He writes compassionately, wisely and persuasively so that anyone from any sphere of life will be able to understand and be provoked to think carefully about their spiritual direction in life. And they will be glad he wrote it and that they purchased it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2023Dr. Brown provides an honest and fair approach to many common objections to Christianity as well as touching on prevalent reasons that the Church is seeing apostasy. Chapter 9 would have to be the best explanation of “Why would a good God send good people to hell” that I’ve ever read. It would behoove anyone reading this review to pick up this book, regardless of their faith background or lack there of.
Quote from the book:
“A little humility goes a long way, and if you want to reexamine what you believe and why, do it the right way.”
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2023I haven’t gotten to finish this book as of yet. It is very, very sad and quite depressing. I will try to get to the end, but all in all, I know God has a plan. We are in the sifting phase and I knew it was coming. But it still hurts to see it happen.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2024Good, thought provoking read for any struggling with their Christian faith, questioning why they believe what they believe, or simply curious as to why fellow believers are abandoning/questioning their faith.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2023Excellent read. One of Dr. Brown's best. Solid answers for troubling times. One thing I've always appreciated about Dr. Brown, is His willingness to engage with some the most pressing issues we face as disciples of the Messiah. His cultural analysis of the present condition of the Church and our society is spot on. The release of those book could not have been more timely. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2023This book provides a great breakdown of some of the main arguments used for those leaving the faith with the predominant reasons being mistakes made on the part of the Church. This book helps the believer to change their often-hardened point of view, to see and understand the hurt of the disenchanted often caused by our attitudes and mistakes, but also reinforcing that Christ - the head of the Church - is not the One who ever fails, and how despite the shifting of cultural norms and the influence of the enemy on our culture, the Bible is still the same and our standard. Among other things, this book is a call to the Church to be more like Christ in the many arenas of our everyday lives so that His love and truth will bring many into the Kingdom instead of fleeing from it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2023I had previously read some articles by Dr. Brown, but none of his books. I had not gotten very far into WHY SO MANYCHRISTIANS HAVE LEFT THE FAITH when I had to ask myself WHY SO MANY SELF-CITATIONS OF PREVIOUS WORKS BY THE AUTHOR? Throughout the book, Dr. Brown referenced at least 10 articles he had written and at least 15 of his books. I found that to be a major distraction.
The book may provide some answers to those who are in the process of deconstructing or deconverting and may be of some help to those who hope to dissuade their friends or family members from doing so. His chapter on "The Effects of a Compromised Gospel" dealt frankly with sin and hypocrisy in the church, the celebrity gospel, the woke gospel, and the health and wealth gospel. His chapter on "The Politicizing of the Gospel" recognizes that, in our present atmosphere of polarized politics, Christians of both conservative and liberal stripes need to prioritize the Kingdom of God both in their personal activities and in the life of their church.
One area of stumbling and deconstructing for many--and which was largely unaddressed--involves doctrinal issues. Believers who are secure in their faith recognize that certain primary truths are foundational and essential. Many doctrines that sincere Christians disagree on are of secondary or tertiary importance (or even farther down the list). But these doctrines can pose huge stumbling blocks for many. I was glad to see that Dr. Brown tackled one of these in his chapter on "How Could a Good God Send Billions of People to Hell?" How one answers that question is determined in part by explaining exactly how we are to understand "hell." The traditional view held by a majority is that hell involves some kind of eternal conscious torment. A growing number of evangelical, Biblically conservative scholars have embraced the conditional immortality / annihilationist view of Scripture. While Dr. Brown himself holds to the traditional view, he recognizes that there are other views that have Biblical warrant, so that ECT does not have to be a stumbling block to those who question it.
Some "exvangelicals" have left the Church and/or the Faith because they cannot affirm a god who conforms to the precepts of Hypercalvinism, particularly when it comes to unconditional election (and its corollary, unconditional reprobation) and limited atonement. The book does not address these concerns. Similarly, eschatological timetables and prophetic expectations are not essentials of the faith--even though some churches preach them as though they were and write them into their confessions of faith. When a weak Christian is told that Bible prophecy predicts that a certain event will happen--and it doesn't--he begins to wonder, "What else that they've told me is also false?" I came to faith during the Jesus Revolution in the '70s. Big name evangelical leaders and authors said that Christ would return "soon"--certainly no later than 1988 (by 1982 if you hold to a pre-seven-year-tribulation rapture). Many present-day prophecy teachers have not learned anything from the past. This is another stumbling block that is not addressed in the book.
All in all, I'd have to say the book was something less than I had hoped for, but many will find it useful.
