Jaeger's look at GI and Nellie in "Woe to You, Destroyer (Who Yourself Have Not Been Destroyed)" is impressively among the most heart-wrenching narratives in the fiction of writers currently working in the short story form. Although the moving conclusion is foreshadowed throughout the story, the inevitable end arrives with sudden and unexpected drama. You know where it's going, but above all you want it to take another turn with at least a possibility of redemption. The success of the story is that perhaps redemption is exactly the point of the final scene.
Don't believe anyone who suggests that the short story in America is dead. Not as long as Tyrone Jaeger is among the young writers daring to pick up the form and produce the kind of astonishing and satisfying fiction he has given us in this collection. So Many True Believers is the best group of stories to come out so far in 2016. Or maybe in years.
