Format: Paperback
A lavishly illustrated and extremely well-written mini-guide to the British Museum's Maori collection. The essays are written by both Maori and Pakeha scholars, and use of Maori terms is liberal throughout -- and these terms are well explained. Wow!

"Among all the cultures of the Pacific region, that of the Maori stands out in its rich repertorie of highly-refined and complex arts. Historically, art has pervaded the whole Maori way of life, and in this century there has been a conscious effort to preserve -- or revive -- the traditional skills of weaving and fibre arts, painting, latticework, carving, tattoo, chant and oratory."

"The spiritual dimension of Maori art is still strongly felt...art treasures of the Maori are not only objects of beauty but of great spiritual power."

A beautifully illustrated trade paperback, 168 pages with something like over 100 illustrations, most of them in color. Index, glossary, and a 3 page bibliography.
