Following the process in this book helped me "kick the tires and light the fires" for this story and for my writing process. Things I had never thought of before came jumping out of my mind when I read the meaning of the tarot card. I used the Tarot Familiars tarot deck with this but any deck will do.
I cannot emphasize how much this helped me with my "stuckness". It's like a writer friend whispering over your shoulder, like a plotting group in your writing area with you.
Arwen is very clear about mentioning her sources, what she has read and whom she has studied. The process she uses is very straightforward, and she includes a number of book and movie references that will help the pop-culture savvy reader understand the concepts of story-telling, of how the tarot works, and how to use it. She has a section on the cards and the associated meanings, but she suggests that the reader look for his or her own associations and symbols for the cards. I suggest that the reader use cards that have people on each minor arcana, since those are the majority of the cards. Pick a deck that seems meaningful to you, whether it is a traditional Rider-Wait variation or something else.
The one thing I think would improve the book is to change the table of contents at the end to reflect the content--not just Chapter 1, Chapter 2. It is cumbersome to say the least to try to go back to a previous chapter to make sure of how one step is different from another. This would not be much of a problem in a print book, but in an ebook, navigation is more important.
Overall, it is clear, concise and easy to work with.
You WILL NOT be disappointed!
I came across this book, Mapping the Hero's Journey with Tarot by Arwen Lynch, because I was looking at all things tarot.
Mapping the Hero's Journey with Tarot explains the hero's journey in an understandable way and shows you how to use the cards to create your story. She poses questions for you to ask the cards around your characters that I never would have thought to do and has different spreads to find out more about your characters. She even has, The Hero's Journey Layout, which is phenomenal.
I've read the book and now can't wait to create a story from the beginning with Arwen Lynch's process!
Even if you aren't a woo woo person, this is worth exploring to break through any writer's block, to fleshing out your characters, to deepening your story to, the possibilities are endless!
May your words fly like the wind!
