Pros: Sturdy construction - uses bolts instead of just sliding into place, will not fall apart during gameplay, good carrying case, better weight - will not shift and move during gameplay, legs for the stand will not go "crunch" when you accidentally step on it, uprights and bars will not crack or break unless you hammer it, saw it, or maybe hit it hard with a car. Framework and steps on the uprights have no give at all during gameplay - it's very stiff.
Cons: Still the same bolas that come with the plastic set - they last 5 to 10 games before the seals on at least one of them cracks and the sand starts to leak out of them; Someday, I'd like to try bolas from other manufacturers to see which work best for this set and last. I'd really like to try a hard set because I feel they'd last longer and have better weight, but I'm afraid that it would ding up the metal or leave a dent in a car if you shanked your throw. The rest of the cons are the nature of the beast. Heavier, takes more time / harder to construct. Due to the sturdy framework and the lightweight, soft bolas, there are many more throws than the plastic set where the bolas spin or bounce off the uprights. (Probably tripled to that of the plastic set)
After assembling and disassembling a few times, one of the legs that attaches to the uprights, the threads have become shot, and the bolt will no longer screw in correctly. I was afraid something like this would happen. Even though it has a carrying case, don't disassemble and reassemble.Read more ›
This Metal set disassembles and fits nicely in the compact carrying case.
We use the Hard Balls and this metal set is holding up just fine.
Quality Control issues with the sets I bought-
The 1st set I bought, had problems with 3 of the 4 Base Bars.
The hole in the Base Bar was misaligned, it was off-center by up to 3/16" and made assembly to the Upright impossible. Because of the off-center Base Bar hole, the Bolt would not thread into the Upright.
I processed an Exchange and ordered a 2nd set.
I received the 2nd set before returning the defective 1st set (good thing for me).
My 2nd set had two Base Bars with misaligned holes, one slightly off-center (useable) and the other 1/4" off-center (could not assemble). I took the good Base Bar from the 1st set to complete assembly of the 2nd set.
The Red Crossbars in the set were oversize diameter and they would not fit in the holes in the Upright (White & Blue Crossbars correct diameter). I took the Red Crossbars from the 1st set and they fit okay.
Next problem, one of the White Crossbars had defective threads on both ends and the bolt would not thread into the crossbar. Took a White Crossbar from Set #1.
Bag for Crossbars:
Minor issue: The bag that holds the qty 6 Crossbars had defective stitching on the bottom of one of the pockets and so one of the Crossbars would not fit all the way down inside the pocket (it sticks out the top of the bag 1.5"). Minor issue but it is annoying.
In the end, I have a very sturdy Ladderball set that I was able to piece together. We have used it regularly (and assembled/disassembled a few times). I Like it!
If not for the Quality Control issues on many of the components, this would be a 5 Star metal set...
The problem with this set is the bolas are complete crap. After one day of use, 3 of the 6 bolas are leaking sand. This was such a disappointment to me because I had high hopes for the set even though other reviewers had stated they had issue with the bolas splitting in half. There must have been a redesign of the bolas because they ones that I received weren't designed the same as the other reviewers described. The set I received weren't two halves glued together but one sphere with a plug in the top to seal the bolas. This plug is where my bolas were beginning to separate and leak sand.
I will be uploading some images of the set that I received.
