Marathon: The Complete Series (Books 1-9) (Complete Series Box Sets) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,944 ratings

"IT STARTED OUT WITH A BANG AND JUST GOT BETTER." -Goodreads reviewer

Over 1,000 pages of nonstop action! If there's one thing Adam Eckhart knows, it's that humans are trouble. After all, he is one.

As captain of the Marathon, a cobbled-together ship crewed by aliens and androids scraping by on odd jobs at the outskirts of settled space, Adam has plenty to worry about without adding his own species to the mix.

But when a pair of mortally wounded humans cross his path during a heist gone wrong, he finds himself compelled to save them.

Big mistake.

Because if there's one more thing Adam knows, it's that the universe never leaves a good deed unpunished.

He and his crew are about to find out just how right he is.

Includes all 9 books in the Marathon series:

  • Bad Cargo
  • Hidden One
  • Trapped

These books were such a wonderful gift of escape. I enjoyed every bit of the adventures from one location to the next. It was interesting how real events intertwined with fiction to really tell a fantastic story. I thoroughly enjoyed each character and the emotions that each one gave. I highly recommend this set of books as one of the best reads available. Thank you Daniel Young!

Overall, this is a pretty good series. I got it as a 9-book set, and feel like that’s the only really good way to read it. The books are each fairly short (about 125 pages). The individual books really do not each come to an end, which could be frustrating if purchased one at a time.

I generally like the authors style, but there he has one writing habit that I find a bit irksome. In all of his books that I’ve read to date, any unit, squad, or character-group keep getting referred to as ‘friends’. It may be a military unit or just a rag-tag bunch of main characters. Sometimes they are not at all friends, just assigned to the lead group. Not a big flaw, but it makes it a bit strange in some settings.

Also, I quit trying to remember which place each alien belongs. There are so many characters and strange names that it can get overwhelming. I did find that by just ignoring who was who, it worked. Easier to read and no problem keeping up with the action or plot.

Like most Space-Opera, there are a lot of improbable (and occasionally impossible) things that the hero’s do to save themselves & their comrades. That kind of goes with the territory.

Some parts deserve 5 stars, most 4, and some 3, so I settled on 4 for the entire series.

This series was really fun to read. Great story very well written. Interesting and fun characters. The characters were very well written and developed. The story was fresh and exciting. The action was non stop. This series does not contain any hard science. Ships jump from place to place instantly, with no lag time, unless Daniel wants to have a scene on the ship. If you're into hard science then you might not enjoy this series. There are many made up names for weapons systems and ship drives and types of shielding.
I really enjoyed reading this series. There were a few sad moments, but so many laugh out loud moments and moments where you just smile. I highly recommend this series as well as all of Daniel Young's other series.

Aliens fighting regiment. The generals seem to be like some of ours!! A couple of humans help the aliens in the fight. Some is over the top such as the things that can’t be killed. But overall pretty interesting.

Ok, so why the 4 out of 5, you ask?
Let's get this out of the way. The editing leaves much to be desired. Moments whet a weird is misplaced or omitted... those happen. But, that moment you realize that a whole paragraph has gone off on holiday. That's s unacceptable.

Now, for the good. Don't blink, because the action is fast, the betrayals are brutal and the revenge is insane.

Eckhart is a hero, not because he wants it... but because he keeps getting out in situating where he has to be. And the only reason that he makes it out of most of these scrapes? His crew. The friends.

Yes, we lose some in the way. But, as with all great stories, we gain even more on the journey. Thank you Daniel Young fur sharing this poem into your universe. It was epic.

I Have always enjoyed science fiction of all types since way back as a teenager, I'm 78 now. I found this to be very good. It held my attention through 9 books.

I like Young's work. This isn't the first time I've read him, but in many ways it's my favorite. At least so far. Good story. Good writing. Good characters. If I had a criticism it would be, I wish the aliens were fleshed out. Easier to visualize. Though I get it..... It's us that are the monsters in the dark....

5.0 out of 5 stars I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I do

This book series starts off perfectly in my opinion. The author doesn't explain anything, everything that is mentioned in the book is shown what it is, what it does, this includes the ridiculous number of unique aliens that are scattered throughout the universe. The characters are unique and memorable, the main Character doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary in the beginning but over the course of the series you realize just how special he is. Highly enjoyable read for fans of sci-fi.

2.0 out of 5 stars Both rushed and too long
Reviewed in France on August 31, 2023
I have mixed feelings regarding this series... Made it to the end out of curiosity, but overall character development feels rushed, space battles without any real tension and very similar (too many Deus ex machina, not enough diversity, too much "shush its space magic, deal with it"). Everything feels too easy, I understand veering away from something remotely scientifically plausible, but it should not come at the expense of storytelling construction...
All in all, it could have been longer in order to bring more flesh to both characters ans story development, but this rush also made me a bit numb along the way and wishing for the plot end to come...
Very frustrating
