Marble solitaire or solitaire chess is a strategy game in which a player attempts to rid the game board of marbles by jumping pieces into empty spaces and removing jumped marbles, similar to jumping pieces in checkers. The ultimate goal of the game is to be left with one remaining marble in the game board's center space.
This wood solitaire board unlike a smaller version I previously bought has the right size. It's made out of solid wood and the holes for the marbles are placed far enough from each other so when you make a play your fingers won't bump the marbles next to the one you are moving and evidently won't fall out. Even if occasionally they happen to slip out of your fingers they will roll and land on a groove that surrounds the game board. Also, this version of solitaire chess has 4 more holes (and therefore 4 more marbles) on the corners and that makes it even more interesting to play with given the difficult level.
I leave it on my coffee table so that anyone passing by can give it a go.
It's a quick game for some immediate gratification.
Generally,.there are 33 holes in the shape of a cross. That set will have 32 balls .and the center hole is left empty to start the play of jumping ,removing the jumped one, until the last ball is remaining in the center.Other games can be made by leaving different holes empty,or even more than one hole empty. However,I must point out that this particular set is a little different in that there are 4 extra holes, one in each corner.
As to differences in the sets, the first thing is the size .I suggest about 8 or 9 inches, because the very small ones of about 2 or 3 inches make the balls or pins cumbersome to remove. There are sets with balls such as marbles or pins, either are OK,but marbles are easy to replace if any are lost.A groove around the outside is very handy to place the removed balls such as in this set. Then again,I like the sets that have a top that turns and leaves a cavity to place the removed balls when playing or for storing.Other sets have a drawer for the balls Some sets come with a cover that can be used to place or store the balls. These are all good features.Ac check of other sets offered here will show what I mean. If you are new to this game there are lots of hints for strategy on the net and evenavideos on You Tube that will help you get started.. Also, you have probably seen a similar but much smaller set in resaurants .These are usually triangular in shape with 15 holes and golf golf tees. There are several other peg solitaire games with differeny numbers and peg arrangements...all enjoyable.
I love that the board is made in the USA. It's well crafted, and the black marbles make a handsome combination that looks great on display. Highly recommended.
