At the early age of 19, Walter Marcyan began training with barbells and soon after won the central AAU Light Heavyweight Lifting Championship. From 1934 through 1940, Walter Marcyan began entertaining audiences as a Vaudeville Strongman, performing incredible feats of strength and balancing acts.
In the early 1940’s, Walter Marcyan moved to Santa Monica, California where he began training at the newly established Muscle Beach: a famous training facility that still exists today and where many of the legendary pioneers of bodybuilding such as Jack LaLanne, Bill Pearl, and Arnold Schwarzenegger began their careers.
In 1946, Walter Marcyan opened the first of seven strength training gymnasiums, House of Health, in the Los Angeles area. He was the first to offer personal trainers to his members and emphasized the importance of strength training to men, women and children.
In the early 1950’s, Walter Marcyan participated in the first organized body building competitions. Based on his own personal experiences, Walter Marcyan began building his own strength training equipment for his gyms in Los Angeles.
In 1959, Walter Marcyan founded Marcy Gymnasium Equipment Company. Walter Marcyan believed that everyone should have the opportunity and the knowledge to exercise at home with their own, professional grade equipment. Walter Marcyan was an innovator and a visionary. His patented designs were years ahead of their time and still widely used in commercial and home applications today.
Now, 50 years old and still going stronger than ever, the legendary Marcy brand continues to make its mark by offering new and innovative products to consumers worldwide.
Rack up a more muscular body and achieve stronger physique with the Marcy MD-9010G Smith Cage System. Engage in intensive training without having to leave the comforts of your home or paying club membership fees with this gym fitness equipment!
This home gym system is made of a heavy-duty steel frame. Finished with a powder coating, the steelwork effectively resists damage from intense use, guaranteeing you an investment that is built to last! It’s off-the-floor base frame design provides increased stability when you perform exercises.
This Marcy cage is equipped with dual-function press arms that are ideal for performing upper-body exercises. The lateral bar, furthermore, is perfect for pulldown exercises, which develop both the chest and the back while building shoulder strength. For dedicated bicep workouts using dumbbells or weights, the free-weight rack allows you to store an optional Olympic bar so you can easily perform strength training without having to switch to a different workout station.
You also won’t have any excuse for missing out on leg day, as this equipment showcases a leg station that allows you to add some muscle to your lower body. Work out your hamstrings, quadriceps, and glutes with the leg developer that includes a pivot point that aligns knee joints and helps keep them in a proper position, avoiding incorrect body form that can lead to injury. It also ensures proper muscle isolation so you can effectively target the development of specific muscle groups. Its diamond-plated foot brace ensures that you won’t slip during seated rowing exercises.

There are three (3) boxes in all. I would recommend opening boxes 1 of 3 and 2 of 3 first as those two contain all of the parts for the smith machine. Box 3 of 3 is for the bench only so leave that one until you finish the smith machine. If you have the room, use a staging area where you can lay out all of the parts for the smith machine and pair up any parts where they are identical as you have to build two sides to the smith machine. Be sure not to only hand tighten the bolts until the directions say otherwise. If you do tighten the bolts to soon, it will make it difficult to align pieces in the steps that follow.
The most complex part of building the smith machine is assembling the cable system. You will really need to take your time and follow those steps very carefully. The cabling comes intertwined so you will need to separate the cables as they are required in different steps. The only frustrating part with the cabling was that they are so tightly wound that I had trouble straightening them out for the install. So if you have a way to stretch those out I would recommend do ing that while you assemble the smith machine framework. Once all of the pieces are together makes ure you go back and tighten per the instructions.
Overall, very well made and very sturdy. I wouldn't call it commercial gym quality but definitely worth the price. Now on to the functioning of the gym.
SMITH: In terms of using the gym, the overall functioning is pretty good. The smith press is very smooth and is one of my favorite features. The "catch" mechanism on the smith machine works very well and makes it very easy to latch the bar at different heights while working out.
PREACHER/LEG ATTACHMENT: The preacher curl attachment is very smooth. You don't get a full range of motion BUT your arms are in the range of being "engaged" throughout the entire motion so that is good. If set to the proper height, you can also use a standard curl bar with the preacher also which is what I do to mix things up. The leg exercises work very well also and you can do both leg curls and extensions on the unit.
PULLEYS: The pulley system leaves a little bit to be desired and that is why I gave the unit 3 stars. I find the tension to be lacking when you are letting the weights go back to the starting position. As an example, in doing tricep pushdowns, there is good tension on the way down but the pulley system seems to lack a "smooth glide" on the way back to the starting position. I was using roughly 50lbs (evenly distributed on each side of the weight holders (which s key for this system) so the action should have been much smoother.
BENCH: The bench is excellent in terms of quality and has multiple positions including decline which is great. I wish it had wheels on one end so that it can be moved around a little easier. It isn't as heavy as a commercial bench so it is still manageable. My only complaint with the bench is the "pin" used to hold the bench in position. The "pin" has to be screwed into place which makes changing bench angles take a little longer. I wish this was more of a hinge pin so that changing positions could be done more efficiently.
ATTACHMENTS: The pulley attachments are all really nice and good quality.
WEIGHT HOLDERS: The weight holder on the side of the cage are great for storing weights when not in use. They are steel bars and during assembly, you have to mount plastic sleeves over them in order to mount the Olympic weight plates. All of the bars have these "sleeves" (smith, pulley weight holder, etc) so this unit could be used with standard weights also.
In case you missed it, I rated this 3 stars because I feel the pulley system needs to be improved upon.
I hope this was helpful. I will plan to add photos to my review when I get a chance so you can see the setup, etc.
Now for the operation, the pulley system is very nice. Using the guide system for bench press (regular, incline and decline) once you find where the bench needs to be so you don't put unnecessary stress on your shoulders is very smooth. The bench sits high and I am 5'11" which is a little awkward when doing a bench press because I'm used to having my feet firmly on the floor. I figured out a comfortable position so its not a big deal for me. When using the outside pegs for my olympic bar for normal bench press is where I found it to be a little awkward due to the angle of the pegs. The leg extension is a little low for me but workable, the leg curl is fine and the preacher curl is a nice to have on the end of the bench. The curve in the upper bench pad is completely unnecessary.
If you are like me and don't like to go to the gym after a long day at work then I would recommend this system. A lot of great exercises. I noted the few things I don't care for in this review to help you decide if you can live with them before purchasing this item, but I am very happy with the purchase.
