About Margaret O'Connor Kielkopf
I was a writer for years before I went back to school when I was 40 to get a PhD in sociology with a specialty in gerontology. My articles have appeared in publications as varied as Catholic digest and Psychology Today. Then I made a retreat at Gethsemani Abbey, the Trappist Monastery that was home to Thomas Merton, and I began writing and giving talks on spirituality.
My first book was "Finding God in Everyday Life" a collection of stories about those every day happenings that make us see things in a whole new way - like "Falling Backward", the tale of how I botched my first night as a hospice volunteer.
"Out of the Dreaming" is a book I worked on for years before I could finally let it go. It's a fantasy about a man who stood one day at the mid-point of his life, unable to go back - unable to go on - a man frozen in time until the moment he awakens in a magical land to begin a quest for the self he has left behind.
"The Beauty Book for Women over Sixty" takes me full circle to my interest in aging and the effect it has on women in a culture that sees thirty as the start of that scary road to old age. The "Beauty Book" is an upbeat look at how to be the best that we can be, from our outer beauty to our inner self, and unmasks the cultural hurdles that can trip us up.
Why do people write? Why do we feel compelled to tell stories? For myself, I grow with my stories. I learn from them and change with them. I like to think my stories will energize you to tell your own stories, and to think about them.
