About Margena Adams Holmes
Margena has been writing ever since she can remember, writing her first poem in 1st grade. At her day job, when she's not kicking young kids out of R-rated movies, she's sweeping up spilled popcorn from the hallways and aisles (she's not your mother, though, so please take your trash out). Her days off consist of writing science fiction, space opera, and more movie theater shenanigans. Reading is a close second to writing, and she normally has her nose buried in a book.
Many everyday things inspire Margena's stories. Going to concerts, working at the movie theater, and the crazy lady who owns the liquor store have all found their way into a story. An observer by nature, anything can and most likely will find its way into a story. She has written for Examiner.com and Yahoo Contributor Network, where she earned a Top 500 award for her story on the Black Forest fires in Colorado.
Margena loves all the Harry Potter books and movies, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Orville, The Crown, and the Los Angeles Kings.

Blog postRecently I’ve been going over the Daily Habits Worksheet for Authors from the Ink Authors writers group I’m in. I’ve found that I need a bit more structure in my writing day, similar to working a “real” job (imagine that!). It’s basically a “to do” list of writerly things, with some self-care thrown in, because let’s face it—we writers would write through the day without a break, maybe stopping long enough to pee, grab a bite to eat, and refill our mug.I just used it for the first time today, an2 years ago Read more

Blog postOne day a few months ago I was having a hard day of writing. I just couldn’t get past this one scene. Try as I might, nothing worked. Maybe I tried too hard, maybe not hard enough. Or maybe I was going about it all wrong.I brought up my dilemma to a few writers groups I’m in. Each of them have lots of people at different stages of writing—new writers and established writers—with different perspectives of looking at things. I received a lot of great ideas, mostly telling me different ways to appr2 years ago Read more

Blog postWe all know someone who has chronic pain in one form or another. Fibromyalgia, neuralgia, arthritis, migraines, etc. My pain is from a pinched nerve in my neck and it affects my right shoulder and arm, and gives me a constant headache. Chronic pain is the hidden condition that we have to live with every day.We have our good days and bad days, and it's a guessing game what we can actually do on any given day. On the good days, it may seem like we are pain free, and people may think that we’re fak2 years ago Read more

Blog postAfter seeing all the different sites, you may wonder, “What else is there?” On the corner of the land is a small fenced-off area for the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Site where the homestead once stood. Nothing is left of it, but a plaque and five of the cottonwood trees Pa had planted around his home are there. The trees were massive—huge trunks that I couldn’t even reach around, and the branches looked like they were left to grow naturally, as they were long, some so long they nearly touched3 years ago Read more

Blog postUp not too early to get back on the highway to De Smet, South Dakota. The day started out fairly windy, but not too bad for driving. After a few hours of driving we came up on a pretty nice rest area right on the Missouri River. There is a beautiful metal sculpture of a Lakota woman to greet everyone. Reid and I walked around the rest area for about fifteen minutes before getting on the road again. It didn’t take us long before we got to De Smet. Wow! We’re finally here! I thought. Blog postLast month my husband and I celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary. We celebrated by taking a trip to South Dakota. Now, that doesn’t seem like a place to celebrate an anniversary, but neither of us had been there before. Blog postRecently, in one of the many writers groups I’m in on Facebook, someone mentioned that authors shouldn’t be friends with other authors. This person said that it’s a waste because authors don’t read other authors and their marketing is useless to them. Should authors be friends with other authors? To tell you the truth, that is a valid question. Sure, a lot of authors aren’t going to read what you’ve written. They’re busy writing their own books and marketing to readers, not authors. But if you’re3 years ago Read more

Blog postNovember. Cooler weather, crisp leaves, pumpkin spiced everything, and that crazy time of year called National Novel Writing Month, affectionately called NaNoWriMo—easier to say, too. It just rolls off the tongue. That time of year when all writers hibernate to write out 50,000 words in 30 days.Say what? 50,000 words in 30 days? Are you insane? Blog postDistrust. It comes from many reasons and once it appears it’s hard to get past it. When kids bully other kids while in school, it hurts those kids tremendously, sometimes to the point that it causes mental issues (I’m sure everyone is familiar with some of the Star Wars actors and the online bullying). Those kids learn to distrust people. My older son is one of those people. He was bullied by someone who he thought was a friend when he was in middle school. My son is on the autism spectrum. Blog postWhen I was growing up, Easter was a holiday where the family would get together, usually around 2 o’clock, and have dinner. We weren’t religious, so church wasn’t a thing that we did, but it was a day to spend with family. While we were all pretty young, our parents would take us to O’Neill Park. We’d drive in and find the perfect spot to set up our family lunch. My mom’s potato salad was THE best, plus ham and other goodies. After lunch, we’d go play in the creek and I remember my sisters catchi4 years ago Read more

Blog postGrowing up in Southern California, we didn't get snow like everyone else to signify Christmas getting near. Usually the temperature was around 70-74 degrees, but a few times it pushed 80 degrees on or around Christmas! As a child, I knew Christmas was getting near by the family traditions we had.The biggest indicator, of course, was buying the Christmas tree. The entire family would go to select the perfect Christmas tree a couple weeks before Christmas. Decorating the tree was always a fun time4 years ago Read more

Blog postHave you ever thought about how the well-known and famous writers, musicians, and other creative types came to be famous? Promotion aside, someone had to pick up their book or recording and take a chance on their work. As a semi-new writer, I’ve noticed how hard it is to get people to take a chance on my book and pick it up to read. Being a self-published writer is even worse, because I can’t possibly be any good if I don’t have a traditional publisher, right? Since I am an author, I will focus5 years ago Read more

Blog postStar Trek has always been a favorite of mine. I remember watching the Star Trek marathon every Thanksgiving before football came on. I was excited to watch The Next Generation when it started. More Star Trek? Heck yeah! One of my favorite episodes of TNG is “Darmok.” That is the episode where Picard is stuck on a planet with a Tamarian. Blog postDear Moviegoer: If I can smell your aftershave/cologne in the theater after you’ve left, you’ve got way too much on. If you can smell it, you’ve got way too much on. Please, don’t bathe in it. Love, Me.There are times when I’ve gone into an auditorium to clean, and I can smell many scents in there, but usually it's very faint. I can smell the outside food you brought in (because we don’t sell anything with onions on it), I can smell your perfume and cologne. I shouldn’t be smelling those things.5 years ago Read more

Blog postDriving around Colorado Springs has it perks. There are open spaces with trees and flowers. Occasionally you see wildlife walking around (at least the dogs crossed at the corners). And then…the hazards. Because there is only one freeway—excuse me, Interstate—not many people know how to merge with traffic. Being from California, it’s almost second nature for me. Blog postNovember is coming up, and that means cooler Fall weather, Thanksgiving, Black Friday (ugh!), and National Novel Writing Month. Writers everywhere are getting ready for NaNoWriMo, stocking up on their coffee and snacks to basically become a hermit for the month.NaNoWriMo is the event where writers gear up to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. That equals to 1,667 words a day. It’s not a hard number to reach, once you get on a roll and the words just flow out. I did NaNoWriMo back in 2013. I w6 years ago Read more
