"Hi I'm Marian McPartland. My guest today is one of the great jazz musicians of all-time, a fantastic vibraphone player, drummer, pianist and humanitarian, Mr. Lionel Hampton." ~ Marian McPartland ~

To jazz enthusiasts, Marian McPartland and Lionel Hampton are names that are easily recognizable as two of the most remarkable musicians in the jazz world. Marian McPartland is the First Lady of Jazz Piano who has been delighting jazz fans with her regular radio broadcast at NPR, "Piano Jazz." She wrote on Liner Notes that "as a teenager growing up in England listening to jazz and trying to play it, she hoped that one day she might meet some great musicians, but never thought that so many of them would become a vital part of her musical life." Her radio series called "Piano Jazz" has been a success through all these years. She says it is like a "dream fulfilled and extends her heartfelt thanks to the musicians and guests who have made it all come true."

Lionel Hampton was not only a great vibes player, he was also a drummer, pianist and not to mention that he was the composer of one of the loveliest melodies ever written, "Midnight Sun," which he collaborated with Johnny Burke. On this recorded radio broadcast in June of 1989--twenty one years ago--he plays seven numbers that are testaments of his mastery at vibraphone, which perfectly complements Ms. McPartland's inimitable piano technique.

Marian McPartland appreciates Lionel Hampton not only as a musician, but also as a person as evidenced by what she has further written on Liner Notes: "It was a thrill to have him on the show because he was one of my early influences when he played with the Benny Goodman small groups. He's very endearing.

When listening to Marian's piano, there is little to tell whether she is playing when she was 35 or 85. Marian has recorded the priceless legacy of giving jazz lovers an insight to many of the jazz legends of the world through her "Piano Jazz" series.

The case was cracked in several places when it arrived. Though the disc itself is fine and I can add it to my collection, I was unable to use it as a gift as I intended.
