Editorial Reviews

Review

Mariana Cook traveled all over the world―from Johannesburg to Yangon―to capture many of both the well-known and the lesser-known pioneers of the human rights movement. The portraits show the power of a single individual―one face, one voice―to transform the world. (L'Oeil de la Photographie)

Format: Hardcover
Mariana Cook's beautiful new book of photographs of leaders of the global human rights movement is a powerful and inspiring contribution to the cause of human rights and shows again the vital role that artists have played and continue to play in helping to inspire the 'better angels' in all of us. The essays accompanying the portraits and the powerful introduction piece by the renowned and recently deceased writer and journalist Anthony Lewis make this a book to savour and enjoy.

Each of the portraits reveals something new and telling about the subject. That Mariana has 'the eye' is beyond doubt. But somehow in these photographs she shows the power of the individual to 'speak truth to power' in the words of the Robert F Kennedy project of the same name. What is also encouraging, in a field that is often concerned with the most discouraging grave abuses of human rights, is the range and breath and endurance of the individuals represented in the book. Mariana has made a very careful selection. There are undoubtedly many more heroes of the 'human rights' movement but all represented here are worthy entries and representatives of the global 'republic of conscience' .

The fact that the beautiful photographic essay book is available in digital format adds greatly to its appeal and its accessibility. It should be a part of every human rights library.
