Long on scientific detail, short on practical application.

If you are setting up a clandestine grow room and plan to spend thousands of dollars, buy this book. If you are a beginner who intends to legally cultivate a few plants outdoors very little of it will be of practical help. Start with something else.

I fall in the second category and have been disappointed. Many details I need to know are missing. There is nothing definitive about seed-starting or the best temperature for germination. The mechanics of topping and sexing a plant are absent. Far better information about distinguishing the sex of young plants is available on the internet. The newest LED grow lights were not available when the book was published, so what it says about lighting may or may not still be true.

There’s lots of detail and much interesting information. It’s a good reference book but not a good how-to book.

A good start for beginners...

I had a copy of Jorge Cervantes' Marijuana Horticulture Medical Grow Bible, and the information in that book was a bit more detailed in terms of setting up a garden, understanding the needs of the plants, and even offers a section on genetics and breeding. Knowing how prominent Ed Rosenthal is as a grower, I was a bit disappointed at the content of the book. For example, there is an entire section dedicated to explaining how terpenoids, THC and THC-delta9 affect the brain, and how those effects are perceived. In that same section, it outlines the different isomeric structures of the THC molecule. When I moved on to find detailed information on the curing process, I found a basic two to three page section that barely describes one of the most important processes in producing medical cannabis. The section devotes more time to the expensive gadgets that are used to trim the flowers, and barely covers what the buds will do while curing. Personally, I think it would be a better investment to go with Jorge Cervantes' book and dvd.

I got this book for my boyfriend because he is interested in growing a few plants of his own. He has literally not put it down since it arrived. It is full of excellent advice and tips and seems to be very thorough. It can be a bit dry and technical at times but it still provides you with lots of expert knowledge and I believe it is a must have for any noobie.
