I used this product for a time for my Betta Fish, Sun Tzu. HE liked the tank, it was bigger than the cup I bought him in, and he was making beautiful bubble nests (meaning he was looking to breed, and he was secure in raising his fry in the tank.) However, I do not breed my Betta, but it was good to know he was feeling so confident in only a half gallon of water. I wall mounted it to protect him from the cats, and bought the LED light (sold separately) and that was pretty cool. First I bought a plastic plant to go with, then I moved to a live plant because I heard they improve water quality. Then I researched and realized he needed tropical water, so I bought a thermometer. I saw his water temp. was fluctuating between night and day (duh), and I was worried the temperature flux was putting to much stress on his tiny fishy body. I was also getting very tired of needing to do water changes every four days. SO... I ditched this tank and bought a 10 gallon tank complete with lighted hood, and power filter for less than what I payed for this tank (full price at the local national pet store chain). I put in a thermostat heater and some full spectrum lights (for growing aquarium plants) and bada-bing bada-boom, I have a beautiful planted tank, the center piece to my apartment, a VERY happy Betta fish with plenty of room to stretch his pretty little fins, plenty of places for him to hide if he wishes, and a tank that requires significantly LESS maintenance than this half gallon. That's just the up and down of it. I still keep this tank around for a back up, in case something needs quarantining, or if the Zombie Apocalypse happens and I need to take him and run. (I had a dream the apartment was on fire, and I used this to rescue him. Not a bad idea! ;D)

IN CONCLUSION: This tank is not cruelty.

Please don't put a living animal in this. It's too small for a betta, or any other fish. Betta need heated tanks, and the smallest tank size that can be safely heated is a 2.5 gallon. Honestly a 10 gallon would be much less maintenance than this would be, because you'd need to do daily (or more) water changes on this size to keep the ammonia levels at a safe level, but only weekly water changes on a filtered 10 gallon. If you want to put a marimo ball or some cool rocks in this, that's a fine idea. But definitely not an animal of any kind.

A lot of work went into the molded pieces and engineering for this design. It's a shame the focal point of the product, the clear tank, is so thin and flimsy. I purchased two, and one of them had tooling marks on the clear plastic tank, indicating inferior manufacturing.

This is too small for a betta fish. You can get a 2.5 gallon tank for the same price as this at PetSmart! I know it seems counterintuitive but most pet stores and suppliers are misinformed about bettas. Learn about betta fish and their care from breeders and enthusiasts (like the Nippy Fish site), NOT sellers. To dispel some common myths about bettas:

- They do not live in small dirty puddles in the wild. The recommended tank size is 5+ gallons. They need at LEAST 1 gallon, and 2.5 gallons and up is much better.
- They shouldn't be with or near other bettas unless breeding.
- They are carnivores and need carnivore fish food. They do not eat plants, and they shouldn't eat dried pellets, flakes or freeze-dried food, which bind them up.
- They need heated water (75-80°).
- They need a clean tank just like every other fish.
- A single betta with the correct supplies for living by itself will cost about $100. Or it can live in a larger aquarium with certain types of other fish.

Hope that helps!

So this is such a beautiful design. Loved it for the hours we had it. Went to bed and found our beta had jumped out! The open top design and smallness makes for sad mornings. Returned to Petco where the associate said I wasn't the first to say this happened. They thought it was strange but now I was claiming the same thing.

Really difficult to keep the rocks in the small rock hole. Otherwise, very cute design.
