This is a great introduction to Marine Biology. My kids are 3 and 5. I began with a 4 star rating but changed it to 5 as I realized that the shortcomings are also pros in some ways and the book definitely accomplishes exactly what it's intended to do. My 5 year old was able to go on and on about other details about the animals (and plankton) just from watching Wild Kratts and Magic School Bus, but didn't know most of the information in this book so that's a big plus. And the shows don't go into definitions like this book does. The illustrations are nice and kid-friendly. While having illustrations that are drawings and not true to life keep the attention of a young child, mine were confused by the tentacles of the octopus, asking why they were 8 different colors and designs, and whether it was real. The question and answer sections (two) in the book are a nice touch and there are two pages. Since my kids lost interest once I began the questions on the one side, I skipped those and just did the True or False, which they were quite happy to answer (their first experience with True or False questions). Overall I'm very happy with this book, as it accomplishes what it's intended to do. I would say my 3 year old wasn't all that interested but it held my 5 year old's attention. I expect us to wear this book out.

Pros:
It's a great into to Marine Biology - she really focuses on the basics necessary to take learning Marine Biology to the next level
Simple explanations and descriptions
Simple definitions of the hard words
Illustrations are good and colorful and were able to keep my 5 year old's attention to just barely read through the whole book

Cons:
It's a rather short book, I guess I expected a little more

As K-12 STEM educators, we find Ms. Terrazas' books to be incredibly concise yet able to delve into the "why?" posed by our two- and four-year-old children. Many difficult topics are covered in this series in a very engaging manner. Vocabulary, phonetics, visual cues & scaffolding, and constant checks for understanding assist all readers.

Marine Biology, the newest addition to our library, is vividly illustrated and compliments our trips to the aquarium quite well!

We eagerly look forward to more STEM topics in the series!!

If I could see the inside of the book on Amazon, I would not have ordered it. It is listed for children 0 to 99, while in reality it should be for children younger than 10. My 8 year old son knows so much about Marine Biology that this book was too elementary for him and I had to return it. The book did not have any real pictures and was too thin for any real study of the subject that can get my son excited. The simple facts about the subject is mostly available in other similar books while I was hoping to see something different. I am puzzled as the high ratings for this book on Amazon.

My daughter LOVES this book. At just 4-years-old, she is captivated by the bright and colorful illustrations and we're working on pronunciation with the fabulous phonetic guides. I purchased this topic with her in mind because of her love for all things ocean, but it's going to be an amazing homeschool resource for my 10-year-old too.

My son is fascinated by marine biology and we have spent a lot of time on the subject, so I hesitated to order this book, but I'm so glad I did! It's written from a different perspective than anything else I've found and we are really enjoying it. It's making the science accessible to my four year old using real terminology and real facts. Plus, it's an engaging and beautiful book :)

This book was far better than what my son was given in his classroom for the subject matter! Very educational for kids. I even think I learned something myself. I would recommend this book to other parents for a great first marine biology book for their kids! With love Tiffany, Maverick and Bret!

Thrilling introduction to children to the exciting world of Marine Biology. I love the way April Chloe depicted the fascinating Phytoplankton and Zooplankton concepts . The book presents like no other the diversity of life in the Ocean and engages the children from page 1. Ocean Chemistry is also introduced in a friendly and simple way.
