The pictures I included is what my tank looks like now with the ten year old Emperor 400. It stays crystal clear, consistently.
I'm so impressed with the quality and reliability of this filter, that I recently bought another Emperor 400 just because i wanted a newer one. It's been sitting in the box because the other one works perfect after a decade and i just haven't had the time to swap them out. Now I have one to pass down to my great-grandchildren.
If you're looking for an above tank filter, I would highly recommend this one. I'm pretty sure they're gonna have to bury me with this thing. It'll still be running in my casket.
Although, I would not recommend this filter for those that have large violent fish, as I first bought one for my 17inch Oscar Tank, he knocked the intake onto the floor in 5 minutes! (it does not "snap" into place, it just sits on the filter)
All in all, I absolutely LOVE! this for my Fancy Goldfish!
To clean, you can simply slide out the cartridges (charcoal/floss, and the media cage) for rinsing or replacement. I put ceramic noodles in the media cage for added bio-filtration. It only takes a couple of minutes to spray these clean with a garden hose in my backyard.
The spray bars are mounted so the water sprays onto the biowheels near the top, so you do get full aeration.
I have been using 3 of these on my 3 heavily stocked cichlid grow out tank without any trouble for over 4 years. I do clean the cartridges weekly, but on a lightly stocked tank your service interval will be a long longer.
During installation make sure the filter housing is tilted forward into the tank, so that in the event of clogged cartridges the water is directed back into the tank. There is a struct on the filter housing to tilt it, but just make sure. Also, malaysian trumpet snails are a source of trouble for this filter (most filters), because they'll get sucked into the filter and get stuck in the impeller well. This will make noise and possibly jam the impeller.
